Do you know who Irena Sendler (Sendlerowa)???

Bless the Lady Plumber!!!

Remember this lady?

Irena Sendler

Died: May 12, 2008 (aged 98)
Warsaw , Poland

**This is from an email I received from my Dad that is being sent all over the world & I'm not sure whose words these are but they are not mine :)

During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.

She had an ulterior motive.

Irena smuggled Jewish infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried.   She also carried a burlap sack in the back of her truck, for larger kids.

She kept a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking which covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2 500 kids/infants.

Ultimately, she was caught, however, and the Nazi’s broke both of her legs and arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she had smuggled out,  in a glass jar that she buried under a tree in her back yard.  After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived and tried to reunite the family.  Most had been gassed.  Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or were adopted.

In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize.  She was not selected.
Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.  Later another politician,
Barack Obama, won for his work as a community organizer for ACORN.

In MEMORIAM - 65 YEARS LATER
I’m doing my small part by blogging this message.
I hope you’ll consider doing the same.  It is now almost 70 years since the Second World War in Europe ended.

This message is being e-mailed as I blog it as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1 900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated!

Now, more than ever, with Iran and others, claiming the HOLOCAUST to be ‘a myth’, it’s imperative to make sure the world never forgets, because there are others who would like to do it again.

Join us and be a link in the memorial chain and help us distribute it around the world.

My Thoughts - I thought it was important to share this lady’s accomplishments.  Since this is a book blog, I have found 2 books on this wonderful woman to share with you :)

Life in a Jar: The Irene Sendler Project
by Jack Mayer

Book Description:  During World War II, Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic social worker, organized a rescue network of fellow social workers to save 2,500 Jewish children from certain death in the Warsaw ghetto. Incredibly, after the war her heroism, like that of many others, was suppressed by communist Poland and remained virtually unknown for 60 years.

Unknown, that is, until three high school girls from an economically depressed, rural school district in southeast Kansas stumbled upon a tantalizing reference to Sendler’s rescues, which they fashioned into a history project, a play they called Life in a Jar. Their innocent drama was first seen in Kansas, then the Midwest, then New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, and finally Poland, where they elevated Irena Sendler to a national hero, championing her legacy of tolerance and respect for all people.

Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project is a Holocaust history and more. It is the inspirational story of Protestant students from Kansas, each carrying her own painful burden, each called in her own complex way to the history of a Catholic woman who knocked on Jewish doors in the Warsaw ghetto and, in Sendler’s own words, “tried to talk the mothers out of their children.” Inspired by Irena Sendler, they are living examples of the power of one person to change the world and models for young people everywhere.

Sixty percent (60%) of the royalties of Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project are donated to the Irena Sendler/Life in a Jar Foundation. The foundation promotes Irena Sendler’s legacy and encourages educators and students to emulate the project by focusing on unsung heroes in history to teach respect and understanding among all people, regardless of race, religion, or creed.

The Other Schindler... Irena Sendler: Savior of the Holocaust Children
by Abhijit Thite & Priya Gokhale

Book Description:  An Inspiring True Story of One Woman who Saved 2500 Jewish Children. This is the incredible true story that combines many facts - together, they form one of history’s most fascinating and at the same time, gruesome eras.

Germany’s occupation of Poland during the Second World War set off a chain of events that were unprecedented in their complexities of human behaviour. With the largest Jewish population in Europe, Poland suffered the worst fallout of German atrocities. From containment of Jews in the infamous Warsaw Ghetto to their ultimate annihilation in the extermination camps, World War II forms a sordid tale of discrimination and hate.

Against this is the fragrance of hope and kindness. When the world is in peril, deliverance always comes, and so it was that a few people defied the odds to emerge angel in times of distress, beacons of hope amidst the throes of darkness.

This is the true account of a woman who was as gentle as she was steely-minded.

Irena Sendler, a little lady who saved 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto is today known all over the world, with thousand of websites dedicated to her. This, though, is the first complete published book of her incredible journey from an inspired young girl to a nonagenarian who spurned all personal glory.
