Review @WolfTales - Dark Spirit by Kate Douglas (Spirit Wild #2)

Dark Spirit
Spirit Wild #2
by Kate Douglas

Goodreads blurb:  Romy Sarika has spent much of her life suffering at the hands of a sadistic cult leader. Twenty years earlier she watched him kill her mother, and now she awaits the same fate. But when the self-proclaimed prophet orders Romy killed, the wolf part of her rises up and for the first time she shifts. Managing to save herself, she leaves death and chaos in her wake.

Alone in the woods and badly injured, Romy is found by Jace Wolf and Gabe Cheval, two powerful and striking Chanku who help her heal and simultaneously unleash sensual desires in her that are as new and intense as her wolf-like abilities. But just as Romy’s opening herself to this new erotic world and the passionate connections she’s forming with both men, danger is closing in.

Bent on revenge and driven by bloodlust, cult members are pursuing the trio. Discovery could mean not just Romy’s death but destruction of the Chanku way of life. With their lives at stake and the Chanku race in jeopardy, the three must fight to save themselves and the future of their proud race.

About the Author:  Some people just seem to know they are meant to write, but it can still take a while to figure out exactly what their career will entail. Kate Douglas started out writing radio copy for a country western radio station in 1972, wrote and illustrated an educational cartoon strip for the American Mosquito Control Association for a number of years, was a newspaper reporter for a small town weekly where she covered everything from high school sports to drug busts, and then, in the mid-1980s, decided to write her first romance.

Many submissions and rejections followed.

In 1998, she published with a small ebook publisher before anyone knew what an ebook was, but it wasn't until 2005, a full twenty years after finishing that first romance, that she signed with a New York publisher.

In January 2006, Kensington Publishing launched their Aphrodisia imprint of erotic romance with Kate's Wolf Tales, a sexy paranormal series about a lost race of shapeshifters. Kate has continued on as the imprint's lead author, with twenty-one novels and novellas in the full Wolf Tales series. She also has a series with Kensington's Zebra imprint, DemonSlayers, and has just completed her latest Aphrodisia series, Dream Catchers, which opened with the NightShift anthology and her novella, Dream Catcher, followed by the novels Dream Bound and Dream Unchained.

Her next series, Spirit Wild, debuts April 30, 2013 with Dark Wolf. This is a spin-off series that takes place in the Chanku world readers first met in Wolf Tales. Characters are the grown children of the first Chanku.

Kate and her husband of over forty years have two adult children and six grandchildren. They live in the small town of Healdsburg, California, in the heart of the beautiful Sonoma County wine country.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 unicorns - I loved it!!

***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!  Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book!

The cover is very beautiful!!  I love when covers have the beast in both forms and such lovely beasts at that!!!

This is the 2nd book in the series and is for adults only due to the violence, discussion of rape, incest, and steamy scenes not involving the above mentioned reprehensible acts.

This book has me front the start, and I didn’t want to put it down.  Romy is an amazing character that you can definitely get behind and support.  Her strength through all she has endured shines through, and she is such an amazing female lead.  Loved her from the start even if it started with my tears!  This book is definitely an emotional rollercoaster, and it was an amazing journey.  Jace and Gabe are wonderful men who are full of life, love, and protective behaviors.  Wolf is also a pretty awesome addition to the traveling pack.  I was definitely not ready for the book to end, but I hope to hear more of these characters throughout the rest of the series.

I highly recommend this book to all shifter lovers especially if you like a unique Chanku take on shifters!  You will have to read to know what I mean!

Review @Lori_Brighton - Make Me a Match by Lori Brighton (The Matchmaker #1)

Make Me a Match
The Matchmaker #1
by Lori Brighton

Goodreads blurb:  Teenager Emma Watts doesn’t believe in true love. After all, she’s worked for two years in her family’s P.I. business catching cheating husband’s in the act. Then Owen Emerson arrives (while she’s in the middle of a stakeout, no less) claiming Emma has inherited a deceased aunt’s ability to supernaturally match soul-mates. Emma wants nothing to do with her aunt’s powers, nor with the frustrating and perfectly handsome Owen Emerson. Too bad she’s stuck with both for the rest of her life.

Owen Emerson is a Protector, a person fated to protect Matchmakers for eternity. A guy who does things by the book, Owen figures he’ll rationally explain to Emma her newfound abilities and they can have the professional relationship he’d had with her much older aunt. But as he soon finds out Emma Watts is anything but professional. Fortunately, when she has her first vision matching two friends she has no alternative but to believe Owen’s claims. But Owen isn’t the only one interested in Emma. When the supernatural world discovers how to exploit Emma’s matchmaking abilities for their own, she has no choice but to trust the man who holds her life, and her heart, in his hands.

About the Author:  As a child, thoughts of far-off places and adventure consistently kept Lori up late at night. After graduating high school, she came to the conclusion that there was no better way to seek adventure and nourish her love of history than to become an archaeologist. She went on to receive a degree in anthropology, but digging in the dirt during humid Midwestern summers wasn’t exactly as fun as she thought it would be.

Instead, she went to work in an air conditioned museum where she spent her days surrounded by creepy Victorian animal mounts. Still, she wasn’t satisfied.

Deciding the people in her imagination were slightly more exciting than the dead things in a museum basement, she set out to write her first romance novel. That book was soundly rejected. As was the next. Years went by and she began to wonder if she’d ever see her dream fulfilled. Until one day she came up with an idea for a book that brought together her love of history and adventure: a book now titled Wild Heart. Since Wild Heart's release, Lori has written Historical Romance, Contemporary Paranormal Romance and Young Adult.

Lori currently resides in the Southern U.S., where she juggles her time between a husband, a son, a golden retriever, a cat and the many, many people in her imagination.

***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!  Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book!

The cover is interesting though I doesn’t really represent Emma.  This is the first book in this series, and it is definitely left in a place that you expect another book.

This is my first book by Lori that I’ve read though I do own most of The Mind Readers series to read in the future.  I like Lori’s writing style and the premise of this book.  It was slow in parts, but this happens when I start a new series sometimes.  I think it is set up at a good spot for the next book.

Emma is independent and questions everything which I like because you should never just accept what a stranger tells you.  Owen is another story.  I’m annoyed that he misled Emma, but he does sort of redeem himself.  I’m interested in seeing what becomes of the pair if book 2 comes out.  I have no idea when this might happen though.

People who like YA Paranormal Romance will like reading this book!

***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!  Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book!

The cover is what attracted me to the book as well as the blurb.  Life distracted me for a while, but I’m trying to get the books read that I promised I would.

This is the 2nd book in the series, but in the timeline of events this book happens before book 1.  I think you can read these books in either order.  This book is for adults only due to the content and steamy scenes.

I connect with this book more, but I’m not sure if it is because I seem to connect with author’s more after I get in the groove of their writing or because I loved Vivian!  I love her spunk and attitude!  I thought Jason was a jerk on several occasions, but he grows on you.  I understand him more than I did in book 1, but boy does pack life complicate things.

I don’t know that I understand everything in this world yet, but I know I like it!  I definitely like Jennifer’s work and will get more when I can.

I highly recommend to paranormal fans especially if you love werewolves, magic, mystery, and more!

Royal Guard Tiger
Shifter Kingdom #2
by Zoe Chant

Goodreads blurb:  A free-spirited backpacker longing for a home + a tiger shifter on a mission + the stolen heart of a secret kingdom = a sizzling magical romance!

Tiger shifter Tristan of the Royal Guard of Valtyra has been sent out on a mission to find Miss Poppy Zlotsky, sister of Valtyra’s new Crown Princess. The mission would be challenging enough if it were only a matter of finding the footloose Poppy, but he’s also been told to lure her back to Valtyra without spilling too many secrets about shifters, magic, and her sister’s newfound royal status. On top of all of that, as soon as he meets Poppy he realizes that she’s his mate. He just has to woo her before all those secrets come out and scare her away...

Poppy Zlotsky has been wandering the world for more than a year, but she's starting to get tired of the endless traveling--and even more tired of being alone. When a tall, dark, mysterious stranger helps her out of a tight spot, Poppy is swept off her feet and into a world of magic and intrigue. But she's hiding a few explosive secrets of her own ...

Tristan and Poppy are drawn to each other from the moment they meet, but their secrets could tear them apart. Will Poppy learn to trust her mysterious stranger, and can Tristan learn to open his heart to his mate?

This is a red-hot magical tiger shifter romance. No cliffhangers!

***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!  Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book!  I also bought my own copy!!

This is the 2nd book in the series, but when I started reading it I didn’t know.  You do not have to read them in order, but I bet it would have been better if I did.  I do plan to go back and read book 1.  This is for adults only due to the steamy content.

Poppy is definitely intriguing, and I love how she sticks up for her friends and protects them.  It makes me curious about the people I hear about that backpack around Europe.  Tristan is way too buttoned up, and I guess sort of tense.  Poppy has a good effect on him.  I liked reading their story, but I think I would understand more if I had read book 1.

I recommend this book to all the tiger shifter fans who want an out of country experience!

What's a Witch to Do?
A Midnight Magic Mystery #1
by Jennifer Harlow

Goodreads blurb:  A suspenseful brew with a dash of passion

High Priestess might sound like an ’80s hair band, but its Mona McGregor’s life. She runs the Midnight Magic shop in Goodnight, Virginia, and leads a large coven. She’s also raising two nieces and hasn’t been with a man for fifteen years…until a handsome doctor takes an interest in her. But Mona’s life really heats up when Adam Blue, a sexy werewolf, arrives at her door. Adam informs her that someone wants her dead and he is there to protect her. Hell’s bells! When a demon begins stalking her, Mona has to suspect her coven members, and even her family.

With two handsome men and a determined demon after her, Mona teams up with Adam to find out who really wants her dead . . . and who really wants her.

***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!  I bought this in 2013!

The cover is definitely intriguing and what drew me to the book because it had a beautiful wolf on the cover!

This is the first book in the series and also my first time reading Jennifer Harlow’s work.  This is definitely an adult book.

I really liked Mona, but I think she is a bit OCD with the lists.  She has good reason though because I’d need lists to remember everything she has to do too.  It is like she takes care of everyone and no one looks after her until Adam.  I really love Adam though he was definitely an enigma with his personality changes.  You understand at the end though.  I really enjoyed this world and can’t wait to learn more about it!

I recommend to any paranormal fan who wants a variety like witches, werewolves, vampires, demons, and more!  Can’t wait to check out book 2!!!

NEW Release @valeromance - Magic Fire by Catherine Vale (Shifting Magic #1)

Magic Fire
Shifting Magic #1
by Catherine Vale

Goodreads blurb:  They’re the most unlikely duo you could imagine. After all, what could a fiercely independent Fae possibly want with a stubborn dragon shifter who seems to think he needs to protect her?  Okay, sure, Darius is spine-tingling sexy with a wicked sense of humor, not to mention that cocky smirk on those deliciously perfect lips that can’t seem to stop smiling at her…

But Kaye isn’t that kind of girl.  She is a powerful fairy, and the last thing she wants is to be burdened by this mysterious shifter, even if he does insist that her life is in danger.

Who does he think he’s dealing with?  Kaye doesn’t need protection from anything, and even if she did; she can certainly handle herself. Or, so she thinks.  But when the dark shadows nip at her heels, and evil curls its inky fingers around her world, threatening to destroy everything she loves, she might just change her mind. That is, if it’s not too late.

Her only hope of survival may lie with the one man she doesn’t want, but can’t seem to forget. Her dragon.

Readers: This is the first novel in my brand new series, Shifting Magic - a world where shifters and supernaturals co-exist. My hero, Darius, is a dragon shifter intent on protecting the beautiful fairy Kaye, from the evil that threatens to invade her world. This is an adventure story with magic, lots of shifting and plenty of romance. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did bringing these wonderful characters to life.

About the Author:  Catherine Vale has been writing fiction for as long as she can remember, but it wasn’t until she wrote her very first paranormal romance story that she found herself hooked on the raw, edgy love affair of shifters, vampires and other dominant alpha males and the captivating women that love them.

Catherine Vale writes both contemporary and paranormal romance for readers who are willing to take a walk on the wild side of love.  Her stories always include powerful alpha males, smart and sassy heroines and a happily-ever-after (even if she often put her characters through hell to get there!)

***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!  Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book!! And I already pre-ordered my own copy!

The cover is very intriguing and awesome!

This is the first book in a new series, and it should be read by adults!

At first the book was a little slow for me, but this happens in new series sometimes.  It didn’t turn around pretty quick, and then, I had trouble putting the book down.  While the start was slow, it ended up a rollercoaster that was packed with action and intrigue.  Kaye is feisty, and I really liked her.  Darius is awesome, and I loved him from the start.  These two are a great pair, and I loved reading their story, but can’t wait to see what happens next!

I recommend to any paranormal fans because we have fae, magic, gargoyles, shifters, mages, mystery, intrigue, and so much more making this a fantastic read and start to a series!

Review @SableSylvan - The Matchstick Grill by Sable Sylvan (The Feminine Mesquite #4)

The Matchstick Grill
The Feminine Mesquite #4
by Sable Sylvan

Goodreads blurb:  Recipe for a hot new restaurant:
1. A workaholic BBW with a hand on her hips and sass on her lips
2. A know it all polar bear shifter who can't resist spicy food or spicy women
3. A pinch of BDSM
4. The best dang BBQ in the tricounty area

The school year is over but it sure as heck ain't summer vacation...

Herb and Alice are paying for their siblings' educations in exchange for them putting in the work to make The Feminine Mesquite, their hot sauce company, a success. They weren't joking. Their siblings come to Fallowedirt and are put to work, and that includes Cayenne 'Kai' Quincy and Basil Scoville. Their assignment: set up the first restaurant in the company's portfolio, as a way to feature their sauces. The only problem is, the only thing that Kai and Basil can agree on is that there is an undeniable attraction between them.

Can Fate strike up a match between Kai and Basil? Or are they going to be left in the cold?

Kai knows the people of Fallowedirt like she knows her curves, and if she knows one thing, it's that Texans love their BBQ and their BBWs, not scant plates food in weird bubbles and foam, or stick thin women. Kai shares that passion but the question is, does Basil? The Norwegian polar bear shifter doesn't know this town like she does, and his ideas are as awful as his body is alluring.

He wants to give her his meat sword, literally...

Nordic shifter Basil Scoville is the delta of his polar clan, but that doesn't mean he is any less of a Viking than his older siblings. After all, he is a Scoville, and he has traveled the reaches of the earth to sample its spices and its women...but he has never had anything as spicy as Kai or the cayenne garlic sauce their siblings are busy brewing. The sauce can be bottled, but can Basil bottle up his feelings for the curvy, sassy, charismatic BBW? Basil is in Texas to work, not play, but, you know what they say about all work and no play....

Can they handle the heat, or do they need to get out of the kitchen?

Worldly Basil can't understand how Cayenne can't appreciate his taste for the exotic. Cayenne can't get it into Basil's thick polar bear skull that the people of Bright Star County don't want wagyu beef and Iberian ham. The opening night of the restaurant seems to be a bust, but, can they salvage the company's reputation, as well as the chemistry between them? Will word of the restaurant spread like wildfire, or is it already on thin ice? Will the restaurant get a five star review, or is this relationship going to earn two big thumbs down?

The Feminine Mesquite is a five book series featuring the five curvy Quincy Sisters and the five alpha male polar bear shifters who are the heirs to the Scoville fortune. Can the ten heirs learn to get along, and will they find comfort in each other’s arms...or in each other’s beds? Each book is at least 25,000 words long, comprising a full-length novella. There are no cliffhangers, and every book ends with a guaranteed happily ever after (after all, these are fairy tales). These fairy tale romances feature everything you love from a bear shifter romance. Each book is a standalone, however, there is an overarching story. Don’t fret: if you haven’t read preceding book in the series, a short recap will be included in the first part of each book to get you up to speed...and you’ll want to read all five books because the last book’s epilogue features --, wait, why am I telling you? You’re going to need to read them all and find out for yourself!

Look for all five books in this series on Amazon, all $0.99 or FREE via Kindle Unlimited (KU). “The Cinderella Cook-Off”, “Beauty And The BBQ”, “Spicy Beauty”, “The Matchstick Grill”, and “Little Red Hot Sauce” all have hot sauces and teas for making iced sweet tea that tie into the books, which you can find on

About the Author:  The only thing I love more than reading hot paranormal romances is writing down my fantasies and sharing them with readers like you. My heroes are strong alpha male bear shifters who can be grizzly and gruff at times...but when it comes to their fated mates, they're absolute teddy bears. My curvy heroines are strong, sassy women, which is why the werebear men who love them will do anything for their love.

This is the 4th book in the series, and it is for adults only due to the steamy content!  While it is not mandatory for you to read them all in order, it is more awesome experience for you as a reader with richer characters if you read them in order!

This is Kai and Basil’s story!  Of course there are judgements and misconceptions galore.  Kai is a workaholic and full of attitude.  Basil seems like a cocky jerk, but he proves himself sweet as a teddy bear especially when he is trying to protect Kai.  I loved this story!

Review @TheShannonMayer - Venom & Vanilla by Shannon Mayer (The Venom Trilogy #1)

Venom & Vanilla
The Venom Trilogy #1
by Shannon Mayer

Goodreads blurb:  Successful Seattle baker Alena Budrene doesn’t want to die. But when she’s infected with a lethal virus spread by supernatural beings, her only chance for recovery is to make a deal with the devil—or in this case, a warlock.

Though he saves her life, it looks nothing like the life she once knew—and neither does she. Alena is a new breed of “Supe” no one has ever seen before. Even the supernatural police don’t know what she is. Now exiled to the northern side of the Wall, which marks the divide between humans and Supes, Alena is thrust into a dark and magical new world.

But just as she begins to adjust to all things supernatural, she realizes that her transformation is the least of her worries—and it was no accident. She was chosen…to be killed by a Greek hero trying to make a name for himself once more.

Alena was brought up to be subservient, preferring creating to fighting, and vanilla and honey to blood. But that was then. Now, to survive, she must stand up for herself—and this time she’s got fangs. But will she be ready to use them?

About the Author:  A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbor who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbors plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the center of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons.  Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!  Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book!! And I bought my own copy already as well as the rest of the trilogy!

This is the first book that I’ve read by Shannon which is very silly of me because I own thirty of her books, but I plan to remedy this be reading more of her books!  This is the first book in the series / trilogy.  It is for adults due to the violence and adult things though there is no steamy content described in this book.

When I started the book, I wasn’t sure what was what.  It clears up quickly, and then you get so drawn in you can’t put it down.  Alena is trying to live up to what everyone expects of her, but she realizes that everything she’s ever been told is lies.  Good guys aren’t necessarily good, and bad guys aren’t bad.  You can’t judge someone based on what they are.  She quickly becomes her own person and realizes she doesn’t need to do things just because that’s the way they have always been done.

This book is awesome with its mix of paranormal, Greek mythology, and mystery and intrigue to keep you engaged in the story.  I can’t wait to see what happens next!!  Shannon’s writing style is wonderful, and you don’t even realize you’ve been pulled in.  I can’t wait to read more of her books!

I highly recommend this book to all readers who love paranormal and Greek mythology!
