Review - Alpha Wolf (Black Mesa Wolves #2) by J.K. Harper @_JKHarper

Alpha Wolf
Black Mesa Wolves #2
by J.K. Harper

Goodreads blurb:  As a Guardian climbing the ranks in the Black Mesa Wolf Pack, Sara Kenyon's life is ideal. A sexy firecracker, she's never regretted her carefree love-'em-and-leave-'em attitude. But when her one-time fling, smokin' hot Rafe Bardou, wants the only thing she can’t give him—commitment—she starts to question if freedom is everything she desires.

Rafe's patience is legendary. Yet for all his strength and control, Rafe craves something he can't have: free-spirited Sara as his mate. Her red-hot kisses have eluded him for over a year, but he can't stop thinking about how they once tangled the sheets together. Now he's out of time. Her commitment to him is essential—not only for his own happiness, but for the future of the Pack.

Losing control isn't an option. But it may be the only way to convince this sweet vixen he's her alpha wolf.

Warning: hot springs and a dark alley are both defiled in this story. Read at your own risk.

About the Author:  J.K. Harper writes about paranormal romance and urban fantasy because despite a lifetime of wishing, all the cool supernatural book characters of her childhood just don't seem to be real. Besides, it's just really fun to make stuff up and play around in her imagination.

Julie is owned by three cats, two horses, and a dog. More horses are always a good thing, so she's working on adding to the herd. She lives in the rugged, gorgeous canyon country of the Southwest, which is a great place to let her imagination run wild.

My Thoughts - 3 out of 5 Unicorns - I liked it!!
*** I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)

The cover is awesome, and I loved it!!  Definitely peaked my interest in reading the book.

Okay after reading book 1, I think I got my expectations way up for this series.  I liked this book, but I thought this was going to be a book I loved.  I expected a lot of action from the rogues and stuff to happen, and it just didn’t.

There are the two steamy scenes you are warned about, and they are good :)  But the rest of the story is basically about dating trouble between Rafe and Sara.  They are awesome characters, and I was totally laughing at some great interactions.  I just felt like action was building and nothing, then it was building again and nothing, and finally a half a chapter of awesomeness.  Then it wrapped up.

I think it book 3 can have those conflicts from that awesome half of a chapter throughout the book that J.K. will hit it out of the park.  I will definitely continue reading the series because I have seen authors totally prove me wrong and make it epic.  J.K.’s writing style is awesome :)  Maybe I’m just an idiot who expects too much action in a shifter book…lol but this is just what I want.

If you are into more of the dating/romance side of shifters, then this is for you :)

Review - Conpulsio by Kris Austen Radcliffe @KrisRadcliffe

Conpulsio
Fate ~ Fire ~ Shifter ~ Dragon #1.5
by Kris Austen Radcliffe

Goodreads blurb:  79 AD: Rome presses outward. Vesuvius smokes. Ladon exacts a terrible vengeance for an unthinkable act—and sets in motion the unavoidable collision of four people:

Two Fates bound by the rigidity of the past and the arrogance of the future.

One Shifter with a gift too vile to use.

And a man and a dragon who must save them from the mountain’s smoldering anger—and the weight of their soul’s ashes.

Conpuslio, a new novella set in the Fate ~ Fire ~ Shifter ~ Dragonuniverse, expands the story of Ladon and Dragon before they meet Rysa, the heroine of Games of Fate. Set during the infamous night Vesuvius destroys Pompeii, Conpulsio asks two questions: Who is bound? Who is compelled?

Fate ~ Fire ~ Shifter ~ Dragon, a New Adult Urban Fantasy series with Strong Romantic Elements by Kris Austen Radcliffe, follows Rysa and Ladon—and Ladon’s companion beast, Dragon—through a landscape punctuated by unfamiliar creatures: Fates with the ability to see past, present, and future. Ghouls called Burners who devour with fire and acid. Shifters who shape much more than their bodies. And two dragons who speak with color and pattern.

About the Author:  As a child, Kris took down a pack of hungry wolves with only a hardcover copy of The Dragonriders of Pern and a sharpened toothbrush. That fateful day set her on a path traversing many storytelling worlds—dabbles in film and comic books, time as a talent agent and a textbook photo coordinator, and a foray into nonfiction. After co-authoring Mind Shapes: Understanding the Differences in Thinking and Communication, Kris returned to academia. But she craved narrative and a richly-textured world of Fates, Shifters, and Dragons—and unexpected, true love.

Kris lives in Minnesota with her husband, two daughters, Handsome Cat, and an entire menagerie of suburban wildlife bent on destroying her house. That battered-but-true copy of “Dragonriders”? She found it yesterday. It’s time to pay a visit to the woodpeckers.

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!

I bought this when I was given the opportunity to review Flux of Skin (review is coming very soon)!  I did this for several reasons which include I hate starting a series in the middle & it looked really good so I wanted to support the author :)

This is a short story or novella (I’m not good at where the dividing line is), but it is about 50 pages.  I definitely recommend reading book 1 Games of Fate before Conpulsio or Prolusio.

This story gives you details of the past between the Dracos & Jani Primes.  I won’t give you any details for this one though because it would ruin the story for you.  I will tell you that the differences between the Fates in this triad sort of unfold in this story.  I love how Kris pulls you in with her writing.  The story is told from multiple perspectives, so you understand everything happening.

If you loved reading Games of Fate, then you don’t want to miss this background to the characters.  Can’t wait to read Flux of Skin :)

Freebie Review - Guardian Wolf by J.K. Harper @_JKHarper

Guardian Wolf
Black Mesa Wolves #1
by J.K. Harper

Goodreads blurb:  Book 1 in the Black Mesa Wolves series (novellas)

Being a Guardian for the Black Mesa Wolf Pack meant everything to Lily Bardou. Until the night she made a fatal mistake. Since then, she's kept her wild side tightly leashed, denying her responsibilities to both her pack and her own sensual needs.

Until Kieran Rendall stalks into her life.

Kieran’s wanted Lily for two long years, and he's finally done waiting. Convinced she’s part of his destiny, he's back in town with a plan: to help Lily let go of the past—and to unlock her caged passions.

A 14,000 word paranormal romance novella

About the Author:  J.K. Harper writes about paranormal romance and urban fantasy because despite a lifetime of wishing, all the cool supernatural book characters of her childhood just don't seem to be real. Besides, it's just really fun to make stuff up and play around in her imagination.

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!

I picked this book up free early in the month, and guess what it is still free so you can too!!!  YAY!!!

The cover is stunning and gorgeous :)  I loved it, and it definitely grabbed my attention.

This is a novella only about 40 pages and for adults since there is a steamy scene.  I really enjoyed this story, and I think it is going to be a wonderful series.  Lily is strong and knows what she wants when she makes up her mind.  She has a past that we learn a little about.  Her friend Sally is feisty, and I like her too.  Kieran is the sexy cowboy in this story who is from another pack, but he had his eye on Lily for a while.

I think there is going to be a lot more to the pack with book 2 since is longer :)  I’m hoping for more action because it is set up nicely.

I recommend this to any of my fellow shifter lovers because it is well worth the read and a bonus since it is free!!!

Review - On the Edge by Kallysten @Kallysten ****Very Steamy - Adults only

On the Edge
On the Edge #1
by Kallysten

Goodreads blurb:  Brett Andrews thought he had it all.

His new club, On The Edge, catering to vampires and humans, is a smashing success, and the beautiful vampire Lisa is everything he could have dreamed of.

When an old lover of hers, Leo, shows up at the club, Brett's immediate fear is that he will lose Lisa. But if he just stops thinking long enough to follow Lisa's lead, he might gain a lover instead of losing one.

About the Author:  Kallysten is a writer of romance novels and short stories, most of them with paranormal elements.

Her first eBooks were published by Linden Bay Romance in 2005. The defunct Venus Press subsequently published a few of her short stories. Because so many of her stories are linked as series and part of the same universe, she decided it would make sense to have them all in the same place, which is why she self-published, first with the co-op Alinar Publishing and now on her own. When she sees calls for submissions that speak to her muse, she sometimes tries for them, and was published this way by Samhain and Torquere.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 unicorns - I loved it!!!
**Gifted to me by the author for an honest review

Okay first things, this is a very adult erotic short story.  It is only about 25 pages, and it does have some very steamy sex scenes including some M/M/F.

The cover is okay and shows the characters, but it doesn’t grab my attention.  You definitely don’t want to judge this book by its cover.

Okay I loved this story, but if you aren’t into stories of threesomes or sex scenes then don’t read this story.  It is a quick read, but it totally had my attention.  You get glimpses into the lives of the 3 characters in this book and some background.  I’m not usually one for short stories, but Kallysten always does such a fantastic job of sucking me right into her stories.

I totally recommend this book to paranormal romance lovers and to anyone who loves Kally’s work.  I can’t wait to read more of this series in the future.

Review - Spellweaver by C.J. Bridgeman @CJBridgemanUK

Spellweaver
The Spellweaver Chronicles #1
by C.J. Bridgeman

Goodreads blurb:  Book One of the Spellweaver Chronicles

Felicity Lucas never really knew her mother. Even though they had lived together for all the fourteen years that Felicity had been alive, they had barely even had a meaningful conversation. It was a relationship that was far from perfect.

So when her mother dies in a car crash and Felicity is sent to live with her estranged father in a deprived London borough, she is determined to move on. It isn't easy - content with her solitude, she's never had friends before, but the most popular girl in her new school won't leave her alone and she's forced to attend counselling. To make things worse, it's obvious that her father doesn't want her around.

It is only after she discovers a book of spells and is attacked by a strange boy who can conjure flames in his hands that she starts to realise that her mother was far more than what she seemed. She had a great many secrets, secrets that promise to thrust Felicity into a terrifying world of magic and straight into the path of beings who are determined to destroy her...

About the Author:  Claire Bridgeman is a secondary school English teacher living in Norwich, England, with her husband, their 1 year old daughter Pearl, their black fluffy cat and the fly infestation currently inhabiting the conservatory. She has written many books but it was only in 2013, at the age of 28, that she felt her work was good enough to be thrust upon the general public. She thinks it’s an awful shame that there isn’t more creative writing in the current education system of the UK and believes that every child should be encouraged to explore the wondrous depths of his or her imagination through an artistic medium.

Bridgeman loves all things fantasy. At the age of 16 she went to see The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring at the cinema 7 times. She recently replayed Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark just to relive the Valen Shadowbreath romance. She wishes that Alistair from Dragon Age were a real person (so she could marry him). Her favourite book series is the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. She met him once. He was very nice.

Her debut novel is an amalgamation of all her favourite fantasy things – a pinch of Dungeons & Dragons, mix in some Buffy the Vampire Slayer (without the vampires) and top the whole thing off with a sprinkling of Harry Potter and there you have it – the Spellweaver Chronicles. Bridgeman hopes to tell human stories as much as fantasy ones, stories that deal with common, everyday themes and feelings like love, loss, grief, friendship and bullying. She wants to explore human emotion and experience using the fantasy genre, and with urban fantasy in particular, she feels that she has found the place to plant her stories and watch them grow.

**Received ebook from the author for an honest review

The cover is beautiful & magical and totally what attracted me to the book when the author was looking for reviews.

This book is the first book in the series.  It is beautifully written and learned some new things (I had to look up what Boxing Day is because we don’t have this in the US and both my mom and grandma didn’t know either - made me feel better that I wasn’t the only one).  I always look up words that I’m not sure of because I’m from the US and want to make sure I understand what is happening especially if it is written how people talk in London because they have a different vocabulary than I do :)

This book had some very slow moments, but it is what I have come to find is typical for the first book in a series.  You have some mystery that you slowly learn about, and you get to know Felicity and the twins really well.  I really like the twins and Felicity was finally coming into her own at the end of the book.  I am not saying too much because I don’t want to give anything away, but there is magic, secrets, lies, and attacks.

I think this is going to be a fantastic series and can’t wait to see where it goes in the future.  There is so much potential built when this book ended.

I always enjoy finding new authors and series, and this is Claire’s first book.  I will definitely keep an eye out for more.

I recommend this book to YA Paranormal fans :)

Review - Don't Kill Dinner (The Rules #1) by Jennifer Martinez @JennMAuthor

Don’t Kill Dinner
The Rules #1
by Jennifer Martinez

Goodreads blurb:  “I love you Kenna and I will never lose you. I promise.”

There are three rules when it comes to being a vampire in New Orleans.
1) Don’t kill dinner.
2) Don’t feed from people you know.
3) Don’t tell anyone.

Not too hard, right? Wrong. Kenna is a new vampire filled with a passion that has turned into an uncontrollable lust for blood.
Will Arthur be able to stop her feeding spree before the coven comes after her or is Kenna beyond saving?

Arthur has been watching Kenna for years, wanting her to try her own hand in life before he gave her the ultimate proposal. Now that she has accepted, will his love be enough to save her?

About the Author:  I like to think of myself as a beautiful conundrum. When I am not writing, I can be found surrounded by my amazing family and 4 dogs or working as a Procurement Specialist for a construction company. I love who I am and don’t mind at all when I get strange looks from people. I am a tattoo covered, child and animal lover who looks forward to destroying peoples preconceived notions of what “someone like me” would be interested in. You only live life once… you may as well make it interesting.

I love to get lost in a good book and hope that everyone will get lost in mine.

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 unicorns - I really liked it!!

I picked this book up last May for 99 cents on Amazon, and it still is 99 cents :)  I like deals :)

The cover rocks, but I like feisty redheads especially since I am one ;)  lol

I love the author’s humor in this book.  I was totally laughing out loud throughout the book.  Kenna baffles me a little.  I think I would be totally freaked if I found out my friend was a vampire but not Kenna.  She is a very protective person of her friends and people she thinks need protecting, but if you are a bad guy it is okay if you die.  You will have to read it though to see what I mean :)

Arthur sort of reminds me of a knight in shining armor who always does the right thing.  He is Kenna’s soul mate, and I love their love story.

Okay, I did not like the end of the book or rather where it ended, but I’ll deal with it because I’m starting book 2 next.

I think if you are a paranormal vampire fan that you will definitely enjoy this book and should give it a try :)  There is a cool twist regarding their tattoos that I thought was really well thought out, but you have to read it to see :)

While in my youth, I used my superpower to whip minor setbacks into epic tragedies in 60 seconds flat, I no longer have the time to hone the skills I once possessed, which were handed down to me VERY CAREFULLY by my mother and her mother before.

Instead of spending my days imagining worst case scenarios, I am now on the front lines of true disaster prevention – treading the fine line between boo-boos and permanent brain damage, fighting crimes of curiosity, omission, absent-mindedness and sleep deprivation. I carry others down the winding, bumpy road of youth that starts out at the nexus of unique and brilliant but intersects with narcissistic serial killer at some distant point I hope fervently to avoid. As you might have guessed, I am a wife and mother of 2 small children. Luckily, my family lights up the sky so I never stumble too hard or lose my way.

I would lament the luxury of needless worry, but alas, I don’t have the energy. As I write this, I am losing a battle fought between my trusty sponge and a hardened glob of half-eaten cheese that traveled from the kitchen to the living room rug in the palm of a very small, but mischievous hand. Its stronghold on the fibers suggests occupancy of at least 2 days, but I’ll never know for sure. Rather than despair, I’ve chosen to retreat to my keyboard, noting that I have won the war - most of the rug is un-cheesed.

Before I worried. Now, I write.

I look forward to slowly, quietly, in my own shy way, becoming a part of this community. If you would like to get to know me and my work a bit better, you can visit me...
