The feeling of surfacing from her favourite pond washed over her. Voices murmured from all around.
“But there’ll be no one there to support her.” That sounded like her mum. The image of her mother crept into her vision and faded out as another voice encroached.
“We’ll request a guard from another pack to look out for her while she’s in school.” She could hear someone crying, masculine murmurs trying to comfort. She looked around her, trying to find who spoke. A forest materialised off to her left. The voices petered out as she shuffled forward. There was a feeling of peace as she entered the space, familiar, homely. She disappeared into the maw of stolen light. Emerging from the forest, with no memory of entering, whispers wove through the air, hushed and urgent.
“But what about her cat?” That sounded like her father.
“There’s no sign of it…” The onyx void wrapped around her again. Alone in the dark mist, tapping sounds surrounded her, clicking, clacking, pause. Clicking, clacking, tack, tack, tack, pause. Like plastic keys…
…
…
An explosion sounded in her head, bringing her back from an abyss she didn’t recall. Loud voices arguing made her surface, to listen. She knew the voices. They were important to her.
“You can’t do this! You can’t keep me away from her,” a familiar male hollered.
“But we can do this, Rebel, she’s our daughter and she’s suffered enough already. Can you guarantee she will stay sane if she remembers what happened to her out there? Can you?”
That was her dad. What the hell were they talking about?
“No, I can’t, but I can say honestly say I’ll stick by her through anything. She’s my mate. I’m in this for life, no matter what.”
About the Author:
I've been a covert operative in a foreign country, jumped out of helicopters for fun, and bungee jumped over the side of a Styrofoam factory into a vat of beans made for beanbags. I can also leap Lego towers in a single bound, pack school lunches like a boss, and burn myself on any hot surface. My multiskilling is out of this world and I successfully masquerade as an average parent 24/7. Do not be fooled by my mediocrity. To do so is at your own peril. Also, don’t believe everything you read!
