Review - Obsidian Souls by Donna Augustine

Souls Book 1 - Obsidian Souls
by Donna Augustine

Book Blurb from Goodreads:  When innocent botanist Alexandria is attacked on a cold winter night, she believes it is nothing more than bad luck. She never suspects that her attacker is not human, and that Caden, her white knight, would be more of the dark and brooding variety and as scary as the thug he’s saving her from.

Now strange beings are stalking her every move and she does not know why. The cops are turning a blind eye, and she has nowhere left to turn but to Caden. He’s willing to help, but he is short on answers and his motivations are not the purest. If she does not find answers soon, her life as she knows it is over. But is she prepared for the truth she finds?

Author's Note: Although some of the story elements might feel complete, this book is not intended to be a stand alone. This is only the beginning of the journey, and I appreciate everyone that decides to come along. Thank you.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 stars - I loved it!!!

This book kept me up last night because I couldn’t go to sleep without knowing what would happen to Alexandria and Caden.  I had things to do during the day that kept me from reading, so I stayed up until 4am to finish it.  The journey with Alexandria was wonderful.  You felt like you were right there while she learned about things she never knew existed.  The author had some wonderful humor and sarcasm that had me laughing out loud and my son asking what was so funny.  I can’t imagine how it would be to have your whole world turned upside down, but I don’t think I’d mind if I had my own Caden.  I love the world Donna has created, and I cannot wait for the next in the series.  I wonder if it will be about Alexandria or some of the other guys like Mike or Alex and I hope it isn’t long :)

I.O. Book Tours - Exerpt & Review - Circle of Lies

Circle of Lies
Red Ridge Pack Book 2

Aiden Wright is trying to figure out who he really is, but the truth could cost him his true mate—or his life.

Life has always been easy for Aiden Wright. He’s smart, athletic, funny, and the ladies adore him. But when tragedy strikes, Aiden discovers the truth about who he really is, and his whole world comes crashing down around him. Aiden thought that being a teenage werewolf was going to be awesome, but it might just cost him the one girl who could make him whole.

Since her mother’s disappearance, Teagan Rhodes’s life has been littered with her father’s empty beer cans and his hollow promises to change. Convinced that others would only let her down, she keeps everyone at arm’s length—but resisting Aiden’s charm is proving to be more difficult than she thought. Throw in a psychotic werewolf hunter out to terminate the species, and one wrong move, one wrong decision could destroy everything.

CHAPTER 1

Teagan
“I’m taking off, guys. Have a great Thanksgiving,” I yelled to my coworkers as I pulled off my Sephora apron and slid into my winter coat.
“See you later, Teagan. Happy Thanksgiving!” Janie replied as she finished up restocking the lip gloss.
I’d been kind of hoping that we would be busy, that the store managers would be forced to ask me to stay and work a double, but no such luck. Guess all the shoppers were waiting for Black Friday. I really could have used the extra money, but more importantly, the work would have kept me out of the house a little longer. Holidays are not so fun around there these days. It’s safe to say this is my least favorite time of year.
New Mexico. I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to the weather here. And I used to think it got cold in San Antonio! I guess when you grow up in Texas, you don’t really know the true meaning of winter. As I stepped outside the mall, a rush of cold November air hit me so hard it forced my teeth to chatter uncontrollably. Zipping up my coat, I ran as fast as my frozen legs would carry me to my beat-up Toyota Corolla, circa sometime before I could walk. I always hear kids talk about how much they love their junked out “classic” cars, how those cars have character. Well, my car doesn't have character. It’s a piece of shit. The damned thing’s heater doesn't even work. But, at least I have something, and when you have to buy it for yourself at seventeen you can’t afford to be picky. I could only imagine what it would be like to depend on dear ol’ Dad for transportation.
By the time I got home little icicles were forming on my eyelashes, and as I walked up the front steps to our house I saw that evidence of my father’s ever-growing habit littered the porch. By the look of things, he should be fairly close to passing out if not already face-down on the couch. A girl could hope. An entire case of empty beer cans and countless cigarette butts surrounded the wooden rocking chair that my mother bought just before she disappeared.
“Disappeared.” That’s the belief my father holds on to—or at least he pretends to hold on to it. Me, I know the truth. Only a fool wouldn't see what really happened. She was miserable at home, hated my father, and had clearly found someone new. Her sudden interest in late-night drives were enough proof for me, but I’d followed her anyway one night just to be sure and ended up at a Motel 6 near the highway. No, she just up and left one day. We moved to Red Ridge, New Mexico, and in just over a month Mom went MIA. No goodbyes, no see-ya-laters; she was just suddenly gone. Life isn't a soap opera where beautiful, mysterious captors abduct women with miserable lives and carry them off to happier ones, though. No, women have to choose to leave. They pack a bag, snag your favorite family portrait from the mantel and just walk out of your life. Out of their children’s lives. Out of everyone’s life.
So, that’s what really happened. Only an idiot like my father would believe anything else. Hell, he likely believed that Paris kidnapped Helen of Troy. No way. Helen just took off with that hot younger guy, leaving her sorry-ass husband Menelaus alone. Life would be so much easier if my father would just accept that Mom chose to leave. Then maybe, just maybe, he could move on.
I have. I sometimes wonder, though, if the face that launched a thousand ships left a daughter alone with a drunken father. Who knows? Maybe she did. My Greek mythology is a bit rusty, as Mrs. Shultz wasn't the most fascinating teacher ever when we studied it in class last year.
The inside of our house wasn't much better than the porch. More empty beer cans, full ashtrays, and the dishes from the night’s dinner welcomed me back, which meant Dad was really messed up. Being a retired Army captain, he’s anything but messy. The house was always clean and orderly, sir! Unless he was drunk. And he never, ever smoked in the house. Something must have really set him off.
I put my bag down and hung my coat in the hall closet. The sooner I picked this place up, the sooner I could lock myself in my room and just crash.
“Oh…hey…when did you get in?” Dad asked as he stumbled inside from the backyard.
“Just now, actually,” I replied as I grabbed a trash can. Trying to avoid confrontation, I walked around the kitchen and living room picking up the mess. Unfortunately, this only seemed to irritate my father.
“Don’t do that. I’ll do it tomorrow,” he slurred.
“Dad, tomorrow is Thanksgiving. I need to clean up so I can attempt to cook this year. I told you that, remember?”
“I know damn well what tomorrow is,” he grumbled. “You think I can’t remember what tomorrow is?”
There was no use trying to talk to him like this. Instead, I handed him the trashcan and said, “Fine. Have it your way. I was just trying to help.”
He didn't reach for the trash can, so I let it drop to the floor and spill out even more evidence of his drinking binge. At first he looked shocked, but that shock soon turned to rage. Maybe I shouldn't have done it, but come on, who was the parent? I was sick and tired of trying to make things better all the time when all he did was screw things up.
He just stood there, anger boiling inside him. I saw it in his eyes just before he snapped. He kicked the trash aside and tried to grab my arm, but I stepped out of the way just in time and Dad lost his balance and fell to the ground. He wasn't hurt, though, just defeated. The look of failure on his face as he lay there was almost worse than the anger. I reached out to help him up, but he wouldn't let me.
“Don’t touch me! Just leave. Leave like your goddamn mother did,” he yelled.
“Come on, Dad. Let me help you,” I said.
“Get out! Get the hell out of my house!”
So I did. I grabbed my bag and coat and left.
Leaving the house like this wasn't new to me. It’s not like it happened every day, but I’d walked out quite a few times over the past couple of months so I knew where to go and how long to stay away. The 24-hour diner on the other side of town was always open, so I figured I’d go there and order myself a nice, greasy burger and a few sodas. I was hungry, and in a few hours my father would be good and passed out. Then I would drive home and pretend that nothing ever happened. Just like I did every other time Dad kicked me out.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 stars - I loved it!!!!

Okay this is a YA Werewolf Romance, and the 2nd book in the series.  I absolutely loved this book as much as the first.  This book focuses on Aidan.  Again, it is written in the perspective of 3 different people:  Aidan, Teagan, and Peter.  This book is packed with lies, intrigue, craziness, more family drama, high school drama, and young love.  The authors do a fantastic job of pulling you into the Pack.  The characters are like real high school students with typical problems you might encounter but with a paranormal twist.  If you liked the first book, you will love this one too!  Much like the cliffhanger at the end of book 1, book 2 has one too!  The only thing I hate is that I have to wait for the next book.  I would definitely start with book 1 if you have not yet read it before reading this book, or you will be missing key history.  Come join the Red Ridge Pack, you will enjoy the journey.

My Thoughts on The Secrets of Albion Falls by Sass Cadeaux

The Secrets of Albion Falls by Sass Cadeaux

Genre:  New Adult, Paranormal, Fantasy, Adventure

Book Blurb from Goodreads:  Living a sequestered life in magical village named, Albion Falls. Sophia's only friend, a fairy named Rosalba, provides a welcome source of comfort and support.

It is a lie. Rosalba is not what she appears to be.

Rosalba's sinister intention to devour Sophia's soul becomes the focus of her parents.

Sophia's family and the local villagers try to protect this young woman.

Unknown to Sophia, destiny calls for her to become the Princess of the skin-walkers. A way of life shared secretly by all who surround her.

The announcement of Sophia's plan to leave Albion Falls brings the crisis to a head, as Sophia must fight for her life against the evil witch who deceived all for many years.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 stars - I loved it!!!
I loved this book and could totally relate to Sophie because I had no idea what was going on.  But I did have thoughts about Alba not being so good, I thought the bad smell for foreshadowing her evilness.  I did not read the blurb before reading the book, so I didn’t know she was evil.  The author did a great job of Sophie’s point of view from a child as she grew up with the nuances of a child’s language and her response to things.  As you read the book you can totally see Sophie’s perspective.  I can totally imagine how Sophie would feel knowing everything she ever knew was a lie.  She is a strong amazing child throughout the book.  This is hard to write without giving anything away, but terminology used for healing is cheesy.  And I did hate how soon the book was over and where it left off.  If you are a fan of paranormal, I would definitely read this book.  I feel like the spoiled child; I want more NOW!!!  I really hope I do not have to wait long for the next book!!!  :)

My Thoughts on A Fall of Silver by Amy Corwin

Redemption Book 2 - A Fall of Silver by Amy Corwin

Book Blurb from Goodreads:  Allison “Quicksilver” Bankes has a simple philosophy is: the only good vampire is a dead vampire. After a brutal encounter with the undead, Quicksilver wants revenge and she’s about to kill one of the undead to save a young woman’s life when Kethan Hilliard confronts her. Kethan promises peace and redemption for both vampires and humans in exchange for an end to the slaughter, but Quicksilver knows that’s not going to happen.

Someone is killing both humans and vampires, and sweet words aren’t going to end the nightmare.

As events spiral out of control, terrible secrets from Quicksilver’s past awaken, and she’s forced to turn to Kethan to prevent more deaths. This time however, she’s determined not to make the same mistakes and with Kethan’s help, she hopes to silence the horror, forever.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 stars - I loved it!!

This book is WOW!!  Amy Corwin is a new author for me, and I will definitely be looking to read the first book Vampire Protector in the Redemption series.  I can’t even put into words why I loved it.  There was Quicksilver’s sad back story that makes you instantly want her to win.  I can’t believe some of the things she had to deal with, but I’m not going to ruin it for you (you will have to read it!)  Then there is Kethan who is a mystery unto himself, and he has his own secrets.  They are both in this struggle to trust each other and both want what is best; they just both do not agree on what that is.  I think this represents a similar struggle most people go through looking for someone who accepts you no matter what mistakes you made or make.  I usually like more romance, but Amy did this perfectly.  If you love paranormal, you have to read this :)

Review of Tourmentin by Michelle Cornwell-Jordan

Tourmentin by Michelle Cornwell-Jordan

Book Blurb:  Emile and Serafine loved at first sight believing in their fairytale ending. But fate and darkness from Emile’s past separate the lovers, with Emile being trapped in an alternate time, imprisoned in the 1800’s by his former lover the sultry Isadora. Isadora is convinced that she and Emile belong together and also as the old saying goes… believes if she cannot have Emile, then no one can.

Time moves forward and Emile’s beloved Serafine dies, but she promises to find her true love again. Love’s promise is realized, when Serafine is reborn into the modern age and has returned to the French Quarter and to the very hotel where her Emile still remains frozen in time.

The lovers reunite, only to face an evil which vows to destroy them once and for all.

My Thoughts - 3 to 4 out of 5 stars - Good story, just too tame for me :)

This review is tough for me because it is a beautiful story, but it just didn’t do anything for me.  It was much too tame for me.  It is a story where true love never dies in New Orleans thanks to Hoodoo.  It has old world charm just like the French Quarter does with a handsome ghost who Melissa dreams of.  It is very sweet and well written.  It reminds me of my trips to New Orleans and the French Quarter.  I remember hearing about the ghost stories from the trolley operator, and this reminded me of those stories.  I think if you like historical type romances with a ghost twist that you would love this story.

Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway for Walk Away with Me by Darby Davenport

Learning to Believe in Happily-Ever-Afters

A Guest Post by Darby Davenport

I've never been a girly girl. As a child, I preferred bugs to dolls and books to dresses. Yeah, I'm not that much different as an adult, either. As my life experience invariably grew year after year, I found myself becoming embittered, cynical, and suffering a bad case of the mully grubs. A string of failed relationships followed by a failed marriage is enough to turn even the warmest heart to ice, and I was no exception.
In the summer of 2012, I found myself moving to a new house in a new town to start my new single life. I was fully prepared to live out the rest of my days as a spinster recluse and had no doubt that one day neighborhood children would think I'm some kind of evil witch and thus be too afraid to even walk past my house.
Oh, well. At least I had my pets, my writing, and an active social life... on Facebook. That would be enough, right?
Wrong.
Sometimes rock bottom is a good place to be. As those annoyingly optimistic people like to say, "You can only go up from here." For once, they were actually right about something.
So I met a guy. A pretty great guy, actually. And I did everything in my power to friend-zone him. How rarely things go according to plan.
We grew closer and closer through a string of Facebook conversations, then started spending some time together in the real world. It didn't take me long to see that he was a genuinely kind man who liked me for who I am—warts and all.
My mind was blown.
After a month of chatting online, we spent a 4-day weekend together in constant company. At the conclusion of which, we shared our first kiss. Well, that was the end of my resistance to love. He practically moved in then and there, and we officially started living together within a month. Two months later, we snuck off and eloped in a beautiful ceremony in the park that was made even more special because it was just for us.
As of today, we've been together for nearly 7 months—more of it married than not. And you know what? I'm deliriously happy. Neither of us thinks we're worthy of the love the other gives, which makes us absolutely perfect for each other. While we do in fact live real life together—chores, financial decisions, and serious talks about the future—we also still whisper sweet nothings, slow dance in the living room, hold hands, and find special ways to express the love that's just bursting from both of our hearts.
What changed? How did I go from a future of certain spinsterhood to a love zealot?
I just happened to meet the right person. It seems so simple, yet so immensely difficult. If such a thing as soul mates exists, then we have—what?—a 1 in 3.5 billion chance of meeting our perfect other? I never believed it could happen for me... until it did and at the absolutely perfect time, might I add.
I learned to believe in happily-ever-after when I met and married the embodiment of mine. I love you, Falcon!

But his anger quickly dissipates when tears begin to form behind the eyes of the dog's beautiful owner--eyes that are far too familiar for his liking. Disregarding his instincts, Ethan can't deny her plea when she asks him to teach her the basics of dog ownership.
Can he ignore the fact that she bears a strong resemblance to his ex and finally learn to trust again? Will she find committing to both man and dog more exciting than the freedom of a single, unrestrained life?

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 stars - I loved it!!!

Okay I’m going to start this review by explaining that I usually like paranormal with my romance, so this book was a wonderful surprise.  The first thing that drew me in was the animal compassion, and Charlie adopting Rugby to save him because he was unwanted.  She took him to a dog park trying to learn how to handle him, but Rugby was the one handling her.  It brought back memories of childhood and being dragged around by my dogs.  Both Charlie and Ethan were trying to run from this connection they had.  I remember blowing a great relationship because of fear, so I really connected with Charlie and her wanting to run far away.  This story had all the pieces; it made me laugh, cry, and in the end jealous.  One day maybe I’ll be lucky enough to find the ‘one’, but for now I’ll have to rely on awesome books like this one.  This is my first book by this author, but I loved it and will look for more :)  Awesome job, Emlyn…I mean Darby ;)
