About the Author:

Jon Messenger (Born 1979 in London, England) serves as an United States Army Major in the Medical Service Corps.  Since graduating from the University of Southern California in 2002, writing Science Fiction has remained his passion, a passion that has continued through two deployments to Iraq and a humanitarian relief mission to Haiti.

Jon wrote the "Brink of Distinction" trilogy, of which "Burden of Sisyphus" is the first book, while serving a 16-month deployment in Baghdad, Iraq. The trilogy was accepted for publication through Crimson Tree Publishing, an adult imprint of Clean Teen Publishing. Jon Messenger's young adult novel: Wind Warrior was published in June 2013 through Clean Teen Publishing and has hit bestseller status and has been nominated for a Readers Choice Award.

Excerpt from Burden of Sisyphus (Brink of Distinction #1) by Jon Messenger:

Private Hicks’ body screamed in protest as he tried to stand.  His muscles ached and his lungs burned in the planet’s thin, dust-filled air.  Under his dark armor sweat soaked through his uniform.  Raising his head, he saw the looming plateau.  Nuzzled within the wedge of the plateau’s façade there was the Terran’s dark, stone, defensive wall.  Relief flooded through him.  Being able to see the bristling antiaircraft weapon platforms mounted atop the wall meant his destination was finally within reach.
Scrambling to his feet, despite resistant muscles, he ran the rest of the way to the wall.  He didn’t dare hope to make it that far without being spotted by his enemies but the reprieve gave him time to close the final twenty meters to the outpost.  Legs cramping, he limped the rest of the way to the wall.  Ignoring the large, arched vehicle entrance, whose heavy doors led straight to the courtyard between the wall and the building set into the plateau, he staggered to the reinforced personnel entrance to one side.  Shuffling past a set of thick windows he watched Terran soldiers within the wall move toward the door.
Sliding in the red sand he stopped in front of the door and pounded it with his open hand.  “Open the door!” he yelled, his voice raspy and dry.
When nothing happened he banged again, glancing over his shoulder in fear and frustration.
“Open the damn door!” he screamed, as much as his raw throat allowed, hitting the door repeatedly.
Finally, hesitantly, it opened.
A blast of cool air struck him as he was pulled into the comforting darkness.  The room was cast in deep shadows and he was momentarily blinded in the dim lighting.  He shivered as someone helped him to the far side of the narrow room, the cool air a stark contrast to the scorching heat outside.  Sliding down against the wall, he exhaled a loud, raspy breath.
“Hicks,” the closest soldier said.
His head swam with exhaustion.
“What happened out there?”
He peered through the gloom, barely able to make out the man’s rank and name.  “Alliance mercenaries.  They hit us while we were on patrol.”
A third soldier pushed past the others and bent over Hicks, who saw the officer epaulettes on his shoulder.  “Where’s the rest of your team, Private?”
He shook his head.  “They’re all dead, Sir.”
“All of them?” the lieutenant asked in disbelief.  “How did one group of Alliance mercenaries take out an entire patrol?”
A soft sound echoed through the room before Hicks could reply.  The thumping reverberated softly as he clambered to his feet.  Slowly, the others heard it and the room fell to hushed silence.  It was a series of soft thumps as if something struck the compound’s outer wall repeatedly.
“What the hell is that noise?” Lieutenant Hill asked, looking toward the thick, outer walls.
The sound continued unabated.
“Sir, I’ve got a visual,” a private said, watching from the window.
The lieutenant rushed to the window, pulling free the binoculars on his hip.  In the distance, a single massive form stood at the crest of the hill.  Thick, dark fur covered its body which ended in an elongated snout.  Sharp horns jutted from its temples, curving wickedly forward.
Lowering his binoculars, the lieutenant turned toward the rest of the soldiers.  “It looks like the Alliance found our outpost!  Let’s move, people!”  As he walked back to the middle of the room the soldiers exploded into action.
“On your feet, soldiers!” Lieutenant Hill yelled over the din of muttered conversation.  “Grab some ammo and find a wall to stand behind.”  Turning back toward the sturdy window he glared across the red field.  “If they want to bring their fight here, they won’t even know what hit them.”
“How true,” Hicks rasped, as a barbed tail erupted from under the back of his shirt.  Lashing out, the tail struck the base of Lieutenant Hill’s neck and erupted from his throat, nearly decapitating the officer.
Hicks extended his left hand, the fingers elongated into razor-sharp points, which he drove into a nearby soldier’s abdomen.  The soldier stared in disbelief, as the skin on Hicks’ face melted like wax, first running down toward his chin before being absorbed into his oily-black skin.  The face disappeared, leaving behind a featureless black oval.  Slowly, the rest of his skin melted away until all that remained was thick, black hide.
The creature that impersonated Hicks swished its spiked tail back and forth and turned toward the three remaining soldiers in the room.  Eyes wide with fright, one swung his rifle toward the creature and squeezed the trigger.
The window exploded inward as the first round tore through the thick glass and struck the soldier’s temple.  His scalp peeled away on the far side of his head as the high-velocity round passed through and struck the far wall, spraying the back of the room with blood.

Cover Reveal & Giveaway - The Bionics Series by Alicia Michaels @fantasybyalicia @CleanTeenPub

Official Cover Reveal for The Bionics Series by Alicia Michaels

I am so excited to share the official covers of the first two books in The Bionics Series by Alicia Michaels! Both books are scheduled to release through Clean Teen Publishing on September 13, 2013.

The year is 4010.
Nuclear war and the wasteful nature of humans have all but destroyed the United States. A new government regime rules the day with strict laws, rationed food, and careful control. When those injured in the nuclear blasts that rocked many of the nations largest cities are offered another chance by the Restoration Project, how could they refuse?

Little do they know that the robotic additions to their body will paint targets on their backs once the government decides that they are dangerous. At the forefront of the resistance is a girl with a bionic eye, Blythe Sol, who wants nothing more than to be a normal girl. Blythe has yet to realize that normal will never exist again for her, or anyone else.

The Revolution has begun...

All I ever wanted was to be a normal girl. I had dreams of joining the ranks of the Military Police and making my family proud. But the nuclear war that laid waste to our country destroyed any hope I had of being normal ever again. They took everything away from me, including my humanity. I am now half-human, half-machine, part of the never-ending freak show that is the Restoration Project.

They hate what they created and they fear us for being powerful.

And so they hunt us, destroying our lives so that they can bury what they built. What they don’t know is this: there is a Resistance out there and The Bionics aren’t going down without a fight.

We stand on the brink of a double rescue mission, a plan so foolhardy that even our bravest men are quaking inside with fear. Storm the capitol, free the prisoners, don’t get killed. It seems like a suicide mission, but not a single one of us has anything to lose.

In my past life, I was a scoundrel; a drug peddling street thug who cared nothing for anyone because I had no one to care for me. The nuclear blasts of 4006 reminded me of the value of life, and a girl with the saddest eyes I’ve ever gazed into gave me someone to care for. Now, as we embark on our most dangerous enterprise, I can only hope that we make it out alive and that those we have lost can be recovered.

Foolishness … fear … hope … These are the elements that threw our revolution into motion. As the momentum of the Resistance continues to build, we can only pray that hope continues grow larger than our fear.

High School Advice #11 - Take a step back...relax!!! by Elizabeth Los @santaflash1, author of Second on the Right

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all of the authors who volunteer to do guest posts for me.

This guest post comes to you from Elizabeth Los who is the author of Second on the Right.

Take a step back . . . relax

Things are not as bad as they seem in that moment.
If someone had told me this during a point in my life where everything seemed to be going wrong, I would have rolled my eyes and muttered, “Whatever”.

But I’ve learned over the years that it really is true. It may sound lame, but what may seem dramatic and horrible one day may later seem ridiculous. I was stressing over that?! Right now, people are in an uproar over the new pick for Batman: Ben Affleck. Ok, it is tough to deal with what you might think is a bad choice for something you really like. But honestly, is it the end of the world? Oh yeah, consider that at the same time we have countries throughout the world at war, or near war, killing people with hardly a thought.

Who cares?
In High School, the rest of the world is out of sight and mind. It is a tight society. Everyone knows nearly everyone. So when something bad happens, EVERYONE finds out about it and it is harder to live down.
So what do we do with this information?
Have you experienced anything that made you feel as if the world were about to end? How much time had passed before you felt differently?
How do we react to…
… being defriended on Facebook?
… pimple found an hour before prom?
… your clothes you planned to wear to the game are dirty? Ok, some guys might do a simple sniff test, but the rest of us?
… smack talk about you on Twitter?
... forgetting your paper, due that day, or failing to study for that day’s math test and trying to cram week’s worth of information into your brain in a matter of minutes?
… a nasty rumor spread about you on campus?
… a secret you told in confidence is now public knowledge?

There are always going to be problems, crisis, and issues. Always.

It may take a few days, a week, even months to years before you finally recover. And during that time, you might feel you can’t get through it, but you can and will. Some have taken the “easy way out” if you want to call it that. But how does that really help? It doesn’t, other than for the world to miss out on a potentially great individual.

The negativity others might throw your way? Ignore them. Know that you are important. You have the potential to be great.

What makes you into the amazing person you are destined to be depends on how you react to bad situations. So take a deep breath. You’ll get through it. And, if you ever feel you can’t, that you need someone to talk to, find a trustworthy friend or confidant. If all else fails, contact me.

About the Author:  Elizabeth Los, Author of Second on the Right

True love's magic is not to avoid changes, but to navigate them successfully.

I am the author of Second on the Right, a story about the origins of Captain James Hook. Talk about going through trials, he goes through a great deal in this story.

I began writing fan fiction short stories in 2010 as means of escape. Every night, after ten hours of work and once the children were finally tucked in bed, for the fifth time, I would sit at my laptop and let my imagination flow through my fingers. Typing over eighty words per minute, my stories quickly began to form from novellas into full length novels. I used writing as my therapy, my release for stress.

I excel in positions that help others in need and find more enjoyment out of giving than receiving. This attitude of giving, I know, can be attributed to my upbringing. My first job at age fourteen was caring for pets at a local animal hospital. I now work full time in the healthcare industry, specifically in the area of Oncology.

On my off time, I am the pianist and music director for a small church. I build computers when the need arising, or piece together old parts for friends and family. I find adapting to software relatively easy. My favorite game is air hockey, which I repeated dominant on over my husband (though he claims otherwise). I am the mother of two children. My favorite fiction character is Sherlock Holmes, closely followed by Agent A.X L. Pendergast and Captain James Hook. After Second on the Right, I continue to write and am currently working on a series of mystery books, the first of which is loosely based on the kitsune legend.

Bonus Excerpt:  “You should do that more often,” he said, reaching out to trace her bottom lip with his fingertip. “You’re beautiful, but when you smile? Wow.”

Uncomfortable with his overt compliments, Allegra sat there and let a guy she’d just met touch her lips with a slow, sensual caress. His fingertip traced her bottom lip in a butterfly-soft sweep that left her breathless.

Their eyes locked as he lowered his hand, and what she saw made her wish she could ditch Palm Bay and travel to Australia.

Blatant lust. Strong. Sexy. Seductive. His eyes deepened to an incredible green that matched a favorite jade pendant she wore often. He wanted her, and in this crazy moment, the feeling was entirely mutual.

He raised his beer to his lips and took a long swig, his heat-filled stare never leaving hers.

Damn, she had no idea what to do in this situation. Make a joke to diffuse the tension? Acknowledge it? Flirt?

She hated feeling out of control, had instigated steps her entire life to avoid it. Yet in a loaded thirty seconds, Jett had made her damp with just one look and made her flounder.

“Is the blatant charm an Aussie thing or is it just you?”

Thankfully, he blinked, and broke the scorching stare that made her want to grab a napkin off the bar and fan herself. “It’s me.” He leaned in close. “Time you fessed up.”

Yikes. Was her reaction to him that easy to read?

“To what?”

His lips almost brushed her ear. “You’re battling an incredible urge to drag me into the nearest janitor’s closet and ravish me.”

She laughed at his outrageousness. “Sorry. I don’t do sex in cleaning closets. Too many hazardous chemicals.”

“Yeah, those pheromones can be killer.”

She loved his quick wit and for the second time in as many minutes, wished she’d met him at a different place, different time.

“Pity.” He reverted to a smoldering stare that had her wishing she’d ordered a vodka shot chaser. “Sex in confined spaces can be fun.”

“I’ll take your word for it.” Heat crept into her cheeks and she signaled the waiter for a glass of water. To douse herself with.

“Not the answer I was hoping for,” he said, shifting his barstool closer so their thighs brushed. “Would’ve been better if you’d said, ‘Sounds good, Jett, let’s go try.’”

She cleared her throat and gratefully accepted the water from the waiter, drinking it all and wishing she could run the cool beaded exterior across her forehead. “How did we get onto this crazy topic?”

“Started with you wanting to ravish me.” He clinked his beer bottle to her empty glass. “Seriously. There’s no need to hold back. I can take whatever you want to dish out.”

Special request from Chris Bryant @TheSwordofHope, author of The Sword of Hope

Message from Chris Bryant looking for some help for his dream:

Some things can't be put into words.  Some emotions run too deep.  My project, getting my book made into a game, is not only for myself.  When I began writing, things were simple.  It was about sharing my gift with the world.  Just before publication, tragedy struck my family.  Within 3 years, I lost my Dad, my Grandfather, both of my Great Grandparents, and one of my best friends.  To add to that, my mom, now a widow, was diagnosed with the same disease that claimed my Grandfather's life, Parkinsons.

I chose at that point to move out of my apartment, leaving my roommates, to do the responsible thing:  take care of my mother.  For the last 5 years, I have lived here with her trying to take care of her and it's hard.  It gets worse everyday.  I remember the woman who was so strong, who used to take walks, worked all the time, had a great attitude.  Now, she sleeps all the time and can't remember what happened that morning.
Here's why I began this project.  Like my book, I want to not only share with the world, but I want to be able to earn a revenue stream where I can take care of her needs without having to leave her alone for multiple hours a day.  I want to give her the peace of mind that everything is taken care of.  I can't do that without your help.  I'm asking you to take compassion for this situation and pledge towards this project, towards her future.  Thank you.
Chris Bryant

20 days to go

Thanks again for your help and support. :)

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 unicorns - I loved it!!!
**Received ebook from Entangled Publishing for an honest review

Wow, let’s start with the cover because it rocks.  I love all the colors and how it is split down the middle like Jessie.  Jessie is there confident and thinking she knows everything like a true teenager.

I hated that I couldn’t sit and read this straight through.  I would get home from work, check my email, and try to read… and fall asleep.  The first couple weeks back to school are rough after the summer off.

This is the first book that I’ve read by Jus Accardo, and I love her writing style.  She wrote Jessie’s character perfectly because teenagers tend to act just like that…snarky and think they know everything.  I also loved that Jessie looked up to her mom.  I loved everything about this book.  When I read the blurb, I knew I would like this book.  There is so much going on that you get pulled right into Jessie’s life.  There were times I was laughing out loud, I did shed some tears (but you have to read it to see where), and I wanted Jessie to win because she is so spunky and doesn’t give up.  I love her tenacity and perseverance.  I wish this was something that was easily teachable, but it is not.  For that reason alone, I definitely will be adding this book to my classroom library.  I want girls to realize they can accomplish anything if they try and don’t give up when it gets a little tough.

I highly recommend this to all my YA paranormal book addicts because it is an action packed fun adventure.  I can’t wait to see where this series goes because I think it will get even better, and I will definitely be checking out Jus’ other books because I love her writing style.
