High School Advice #6 - Love it, Hate it, or something more! Guest post by Melissa Groeling author of Traffic Jam

My 6th High School Advice guest post is by Melissa Groeling who is the author of Traffic Jam.  Links to other High School Advice guest posts can be found at the end of this post.  Thank you to Melissa & all of the other fabulous authors who have supported my Guest post vision.

Now onto Melissa’s post:

          High school.
The best years of your life?
Or the seventh circle of hell?
          Good memories?
Or nothing more than days full of too much homework, people you don’t like and waking up way too early?
High school has the capacity to be one or all of the above. It’s the only place outside of a warzone where you can rightfully deem yourself as nothing short of a freaking superhero for making it out alive every day. And I’m not just talking about the long hours, the school work, the detentions or even that one person who goes out of his or her way every single lunch period to make your life a living hell. I’m talking about the decisions you make. I’m talking about that decision-making ability that you will eventually hone in order to be the person that you’ll be comfortable being.
          Sounds corny, right?
Okay, let me break it down for you.
I had the dubious honor of going to two high schools. The first was a small was in New Jersey and the second was a huge, regional school in Pennsylvania. The differences, as you can imagine, were staggering. I lost all my friends when we moved, the house I grew up in, the familiarity of everything that was mine. I always thought I knew myself, my limits, my boundaries until I was swept away in a school that had over 3,000 students.
In a word, it was madness.
I lost who I was. I wasn’t sure of anything. I doubted myself because everything was so different—the classes, the faces, the accents (that was definitely something you couldn’t help but notice). My first year consisted of me being pissed off, snobby and completely disagreeable. I couldn’t wait to get home every day because my family, at least, was still familiar to me.
It all comes back to my first point: making it out alive. And I’m not sure how I even managed it.
I’m not going to wrap this up in a Hallmark movie moment and tell you I had some grand epiphany and suddenly everything fell in place. It took well into my junior year before I felt anything even remotely close to not-angry and not-awkward. By then, my temperament had cooled and I knew what I had to do in order to excel enough to get my diploma and get the hell away from there.
And when I did, it was bittersweet.
Even though you don’t want it to be, high school becomes familiar to you like your favorite jeans. When you leave it, you’re leaving it to try new and better things.
High school doesn’t last forever. Some people want it to but most people don’t. I was definitely one of those who didn’t want it to. It’s painful, awkward and frustrating but it’s also a place where you can start to unearth little bits of yourself. Eventually you’ll find your way out.
When you do, don’t bother looking back. Because forward is where the rest of your life is.

          Without the homework.

This book has a lot of intrigue, and I like stories with powers like telekinesis.  I love Skye because she is a strong and very protective single mom, and this is how I like to see myself.  I don’t think we got a very good look at her son in this story.  We did learn a lot about David Bishop.  At first I thought he was sort of a jerk, but he grows on you.  My only complaint is there wasn’t enough action, and I’m sure this is just me.  I like mystery and intrigue, but I want a whole lot of action too.  I didn’t get that with this story.  I enjoyed it, but I easily put it down.  I thought this story would have more paranormal than it did. Remember I rate based on my enjoyment of the read, this is well written and a fabulous story.

I haven’t figured out if this is a series, but it has possibilities and I would probably read them.  I think people who like mysteries will love this story, but paranormal fans won’t be as satisfied.  This is a nice story though :)

GHBT Blog Tour & Review - Embracing the Flames by Candace Knoebel

Born in Flames
Born in Flames Book #1
by Candace Knoebel

Blurb:
Red mirrored scales race up my arms as the haze of pain blurs my vision. My bones crack, breaking to realign. I scream. It is then that the realization of my unavoidable fate sinks in; I am of a dying race. I am dragon.

Aurora Megalos, orphaned and teetering on the edge of adulthood, thought finding her past would curb the sting of being an outcast. Having no memories of the time before she awoke on her foster mother’s doorstep, she yearns for the emptiness inside her to be filled. With her fellow orphaned best friend, Fenn, by her side, she has nothing to lose and everything to gain. But something powerful stirred within her that she couldn’t explain. Something wanted out.

In the dark of night, a crazed Seer, dubbed Mr.Creepy, erases everything she’s ever known with an impending prophecy. She now faces two paths. Return to her true home to protect a dying race against a growing evil, or stay hidden in the safety of our realm with a shot at a true love. With a vengeful Arch Enemy stopping at nothing to see her dead, she’s running out of time; a decision must be made. What would you choose?

Wow, Candace created a whole new world for me to love and be sucked right into :)  This is the first book in the series, and for me, there were a couple parts that I didn’t find interesting, but it was required for character building.  The 2nd half of the book, I couldn’t put down and read it straight through until 4:30 in the morning.  At first Aurora’s character annoyed me because I thought she was a pity party girl, but her character grew in all sorts of directions, and I love her now :)  Fenn, on the other hand, I loved from the get go :) but he was the strong reasonable rock :)  This story has magic, amnesia, friendship, mystery, dragons, love, secrets, a prophecy, an evil jerk, reunions, and was an awesome journey.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves magic, dragons, and wonderful new fantasy worlds to vacation in while reading :)

Embracing the Flames
Born in Flames Book #2
by Candace Knoebel

Blurb:
The Stone of Immortality has always been kept under the watch of the Draconta. That is, until the betrayal of a Fate. Now everything is about to change.

Aurora Megalos accepted her destiny without blinking-even if it meant succumbing to her dragon side. Deemed the Progeny, she left the ordinary life she knew and has done everything in her power to learn the ways of her new realm and what it means to be part dragon. But when her mentor, Astral, suddenly disappears, she is forced to take the reins.

With war on the brink, she sets out on an epic journey to not only find her mentor, but to stop her Arch Enemy, Zordon, from obtaining the Stone of Immortality. But what she discovers about him along the way is far worse than she could’ve ever imagined. She will be tested and pushed to the limit. Lives will be lost, love will be questioned, and a battle will begin.

About the Author:

Candace Knoebel had dreamed of being a dancer ever since she could remember. With a love of all things art, she saw herself moving to New York and pursuing her passion as an artist. But all that changed on October 10th, 2002 when she met the love of her life. Her dreams diverged and after marrying her high school sweetheart and having two beautiful children, she realized she missed her creative side.

Growing up alongside the Harry Potter series, Candace found herself missing the epicosity of a story that pulls you in and won’t let you go. In 2009, she began dreaming up characters that would mold her first novel. Through lunch breaks and late nights, after putting her kids to bed, she built a world where she could escape the ever-pressing days of an eight to five Purgatory. She found her calling in life and knew this was more than dancing could’ve ever meant to her.

Once complete in 2010, she began the grueling process of finding a publisher. With relentless determination, she was finally able to realize her dream in December of 2011 when 48fourteen offered her a publishing contract. With a HUGE yes and a happy dance, she  continues her Trilogy.

**Gifted to me as part of a blog tour by Girls Heart Books

Okay I’m torn with this book.  It started at a 3 because I could easily put the book down, and it was like it was the first book in a series because now that Aurora was in a new world, we all have to learn about this new world with her.  It seems as she went down the rabbit hole so to speak into this new world that she left all her confidence in the other realm.  This annoyed me because I wanted her to be strong heroine, but it is okay because Fenn and Zane took up her slack, and I love them all the more for it.  As the action got better, I really liked it, and it moved to a 4.  At the end, I loved all the battles and action making it 5 worthy.  So you can see my dilemma with trying to put a number on it.  I decided 4 because it was the average of the enjoyment.  I so wanted this book to be better than the last one, but I understand why it was like the 1st book in the series even though it is the 2nd.  There is a cliffhanger, but stop your whining, it is the logical place to stop.  This book did have so much going on with people dying, traitors, dark magic, dragons, harpies, sirens, light magic, Fates, battles, owl people, and so much more.  Aurora did redeem herself with acts of courage and getting more confidence.  Some things I could totally see where it was going, and others, I had no clue and was surprised.  I’m betting that book 3 will be epic and I can’t wait to read it to see what happens next.

I think if you like battles, magic, dragons, and that everything does not turn up roses, you will enjoy reading this story and if you read the first book and enjoyed it, you should read what happens.  You will be surprised….

High School Advice #5 - What NOT to do! Guest post by Michael Loring author of Dehumanized

Okay I have had lots of posts giving advice of what to do, well this is a what NOT to do guest post.

Guest post by Michael Loring author of Dehumanized

By the time I started high school I was so certain I was done with school all together. I thought to myself, “I’ve made it this far, why the heck should I keep going?” I thought I was so smart back then. I’d tell any one who’d listen how school was worthless and I was ready to leave. So after my freshman year I decided I was going to drop out. I did maybe two months of sophomore year for my mother’s sake before I just left. I thought I was going to just get a job, write my book, and live smoothly without the burden of another three years of school.
I was so wrong.
It wasn’t long after I left school that reality smacked me right in the face. I discovered how most jobs are strict on wanting all employees to either be in school or have graduated. I found out how far behind my education was compared to everyone around me, and that made me feel so inadequate. All of my friends started getting smarter than me, and I got stuck in this rut of no advancement. By the time I realized what a mistake I had made by leaving school it was too late. I was too far behind and they wouldn’t take me back, which further hurt my ego. A few years after dropping out I found myself completely devastated because nothing was how I’d thought it would be. I thought I was ready for the real world, but unfortunately I was far from ready. If I had stayed in school like I should have I’m certain I would have been much more prepared.
I missed out on essential years that helped define a person into what they are meant to become. High school seems like this big, daunting, horrible prison, when in reality it’s an important stepping stone to life. To this day I regret not completing my schooling. Sure I’ve written a book, but imagine how much better it would be had I stayed in school and studied English and Literature? I still struggle with certain grammatical rules because I didn’t stay long enough to learn about them.
You think you’re being taught things you would never use in a million years, but you’re wrong. In the real world you need to have a good understanding of just about everything to survive. Don’t be like me and drop out, because right now you’re thinking the same way I was, “I’m too good for school, I’ve learned enough, I’m ready for the real world,” and you’re going to end up learning the hard way you’re completely wrong on all accounts. Just like I did.
Don’t drop out, it’s not worth it. Trust me, I did it and I’ve regretted it ever since.

OMG, I totally didn’t see this direction coming.  This is an absolute must read :)  I should tell you straight off the format of this book is different from the first book.  The first book was about Adain and his year as a Tender basically only his point of view with a little Cill’s perspective.  Book2 goes back and forth between Cill’s and Shan’s perspectives, and it totally worked and had me chomping at the bit, so to speak & the time frame is considerably shorter than a year (sneaky B.T.).

Wow, there is something that I’m totally doing the happy dance for, and others I can’t even put into words because I don’t want to ruin anything for you.  I hope no one else does it either.    There are so many life lessons built into this series.  Let’s just say big changes are coming, but you have to read it to see.  B.T. stop making the books the same length, I WANT MORE :) pretty please :)  I’m kidding do what you do because it is fabulous!! (ok, really though I do want more!!)  It really is hard to rave about something, but not give details away.  I love this series so much!

This is an absolute must read for anyone with kids from middle school on up.  Read this series with your kids, talk to them, and help them see new perspectives and not to be sheep.  I absolutely will be reading this with my son and putting it in my classroom.

High School Advice #4 - Guest Post by Courtney Pierce author of Stitches

What Would You Do If You Had No Fear?

I was admonished, many times, in parent-teacher conferences for looking out the window in class. My teacher was frustrated that I aced the tests, since it appeared that I wasn’t paying any attention. Somehow, though, the information got through. I dreamed of other worlds in high school because reality felt so uncomfortable (we’re talking in the late 60s and early 70s). But I did absorb what my teacher said—and spent hours, days, and weeks obsessing about it—while I looked out the window. From the frightening possibility of nuclear war to the antics on Leave it to Beaver, the elegant prose of William Shakespeare to the shock of 2001: A Space Odyssey, it was all food for dreaming.

That was over forty years ago. Life now, in many ways, is no different. There’s always a window to look out of and dream. The biggest difference, back then, was that there were no computers, no Internet, no cell phones, or fancy gadgets to get in the way. No, I didn’t walk twenty miles to school, but I did have a ’72 Volkswagen bug with an 8-track player, blaring out a tinny version of Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life. That was as fancy as it got.

I faced my fears of the real world and became a performer on stage. See a pattern of escape here? I threw myself into the drama club and auditioned for every musical and dramatic stage work. I lusted to become a voice and music major in college, immersing myself in opera, Jazz, Blues, and ancient music. Getting lost in the world of a character helped me to get over my fears and learn to be a team player in the band.

After five years of hard work, studying what I loved, I proudly accepted my college degree in Music. Mission accomplishedNOT! I quickly realized I couldn’t make a decent living in the real music world. All those years; all that work. But it wasn’t in vain. I dove into the business of making music and live theater, working my way up to be an executive in the Broadway entertainment industry. It was rewarding and hard – really hard. It only took twenty years to become an overnight sensation.

I’m fifty-four, and I still look out the window. But now, I know more about what I see.

That’s why I became a writer. I left my corporate life behind, because it was time to do something with all that time I had logged looking out that darned window. My magical world of high school came back to me in updated Hi-Def vision and combined with my years of hard work. It fueled a whole new career. And when I want to read a book that takes me into another world, I pluck my own from my nightstand. Another mission accomplished. YEAH!

As I write about the magic of life for ten to twelve hours a day, nearly seven days a week, I ask you this:  What would you do if you ran into a magical object that could make you immortal?

The characters in my books ask themselves that very question. Of course, I give them some pretty cool magic and immortal help to nudge them toward the answer. For them, the path to happiness is marked by helping other people and catching “bad guys” with the FBI. That’s how they create a legacy for themselves.

Writing is hardI won’t lie—and it’s not without risk. My characters take big risks, too, but know they can’t cheat life . . . or death. Cheating has ramifications.

If you needed surgery, do you want your life to be in the hands of a doctor who’s cheated their way through medical school? If you’re sued, do you want a lawyer who doesn’t really understand the law to represent you? If you opened a restaurant, would you want your customers to skip out on the bill after you’ve created a wonderful meal?

Trust is powerful. Trust is everything. And trust in yourself is tantamount to being a success in whatever you decide to do.

So, what’s going to be your legacy? How do you want the world to remember you?

I’m just askin’ . . .

Her first book, Stitches, is part of a trilogy series that follows the magical journey of an older couple who discover a magical piece of fabric at an estate sale. It holds the key to immortality. And what they do with it will change the course of their lives. The second book in the series, Brushes, brings together the power of art and financial fraud with a magical painting.
