Review - Silence (The Queen of the Dead #1) by Michelle Sagara @msagara

Silence
The Queen of the Dead #1
by Michelle Sagara

Goodreads blurb:  It began in the graveyard…

Ever since her boyfriend Nathan had died in a tragic accident, Emma had been coming to the graveyard at night.  During the day she went through the motions at her prep school, in class, with her friends, but that’s all it was.  For Emma, life had stopped with Nathan’s death.  But tonight was different.  Tonight Emma and her dog were not alone in the cemetery.  There were two others there—Eric, who had just started at her school, and an ancient woman who looked as though she were made of rags.  And when they saw Emma there, the old woman reached out to her with a grip as chilling as death….

Emma was not quite like others teenagers. It was true that other girls had experienced grief.  Other girls had also lost their fathers, or had their boyfriends die in a senseless accident. But though she hadn’t known it till that night in the graveyard, unlike those other girls, she could see, touch, and speak with the dead.  In fact, Emma could draw upon the essence of the dead to work magic.  That was what Necromancers did. But Emma had no desire to be a Necromancer. She just wanted to help the ghosts who walked the streets of Toronto, unable to escape from the land of the living.  And that was just as well, because had she chosen the path of the Necromancer, Eric would have had to kill her.

Instead, Eric and his fellow Necromancer hunter Chase found themselves violating every rule they were sworn to follow, becoming part of Emma’s group, helping her to stand against those who preyed upon the dead.  But whether Emma and her friends could survive such a battle was anyone’s guess.  And whether Emma could learn to use the magic of the dead against her enemies without herself falling victim to the lure of such power remained to be seen.  Eric seemed to think she could, and her living friends would never abandon her.  But only time would tell what Emma’s true destiny was….

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!

I bought this book because I got was approved to review book 2 and hadn’t read book 1 yet.  If I can help it, I try not to start a series in the middle if I can afford it at the time :)

The cover is beautiful, mysterious, and looks very magical :)  It definitely attracts me to want to read it.

Okay when I started this book, I thought it was sort of depressing, and I wasn’t sure I even liked the book.  I kept reading though and learned a lot about Emma and her friends.  And it was a slow process, but I went from the book was OK to the end where I loved the book and characters.  This is why I give it a 4.  It is a slow starter, but some of the best fires are slow to start, right?

Emma is almost a loner, but her friends wouldn’t allow her to be left to her grief and her own sense of responsibility toward her friends.  I love her sense of morals, and there are a lot of lessons built into this book about grief, autism, and friendship in general making it a fabulous book.

I can’t wait to start book 2 which is the next book I’m reading :)

I recommend this book to those who love a good YA book with great life lessons mixed in with magic, spirits, necromancers, and hunters!!!

A Book Obession Tour @KT_Clapsadl: Excerpt & Giveaway - Mind Trace by Holly McCaghren

Mind Trace
by Holly McCaghren

What would you do to possess unlimited knowledge and power?
Nineteen year-old Alice McArthur never had a choice. A shy girl from a small town, Alice has gained a reputation for her near-genius programming abilities, even getting the attention of EngineerCorp, a rising electronics empire. With her unique skill-set she is hand-picked to test their network security by hacking into their global mainframe.
But something goes terribly wrong.
The next thing Alice knows, she wakes up on the floor with a migraine, unnatural powers, a server’s worth of data in her head and the realization that this job was not what it seemed.
Now a fugitive from justice and on the run from the evil leader of a corporate empire, Alice doesn’t know who to trust or where to turn. She must find a way to secure her freedom and stop those who would keep her prisoner for life — or worse.

Excerpt:
As she was closing the side cargo compartment on her Ducati, a deep, velvety voice spoke behind her.
"Going somewhere, Alice?"
She spun around so fast that she tripped over the wheel on her bike and fell down onto gravel. As fast as she could manage, she stood up and found herself backed against the opposite sidewall under the carport.
It's him!
Eric stood there, on the edge of the opposite wall. He was dressed in a perfectly fitted, expensive-looking suit, leaning casually against the wall as if he had every right to be there. A smirk teased the corner of his lips, and his eyes glittered menacingly down at her. She quickly glanced around, trying to assess her chances of escape. She didn't see anyone else around, but she had to assume that there were others, currently hiding out of view.
How did this happen? I should have known better. I should have been prepared! What am I going to do? I have to stall him until I figure out a plan.
"Wha-what are you doing here?" she finally managed to ask him.
Eric smiled; a confident look on his face.
"Alice, dear. Let us not feign ignorance. You know very well why I am here. You took something from me, and I want it back. It's really quite simple."
"How could I possibly have anything that you want? I don't even know who you are!"
"Oh, I think you know exactly who I am. That is irrelevant though, because I know for a fact that you gained unlawful access to a large amount of data that did not belong to you. You are going to take a little trip with me, so we can discuss all of this in great detail."
He paused, and then turned his head, glancing behind him, mouth opening as if to speak. She saw four men dressed in black tactical uniforms seemingly materialize, fanning out behind Eric.
You have to be kidding!
Alice looked around, rapidly calculating the best possible route of escape.
Now or never.
Without hesitating, she bolted around the edge of the carport, running as fast as she could in the direction of the forest surrounding the cabin.

About the Author:  I was born and raised in the Houston, Texas area, and have lived in Texas my whole life! (Gotta love humidity!)
Nothing makes me happier than settling down with a good book, but they aren’t always easy to find! Some of my favorites (in no particular order) include: Jane Eyre, The Blue Sword, Dracula, Ender’s Game, Heir to the Empire, and the Harry Potter series. I love a good scifi/fantasy book, but it certainly isn’t limited to that genre.
My first book was just published via Createspace, called “Mind Trace.” It is a science fiction/adventure novel, appropriate for all ages! It is currently available through Amazon.com (paperback and Kindle), Barnesandnoble.com (paperback), and the Createspace store.

Extra Special Bonus Excerpt:
She was almost to the elevator when she heard a frantic yelling in her ear.
"Code Red! I repeat, Code Red! The Project Alchernon server has completely shut down!"
After a tense moment, the man replied frantically, "Martin is heading your way now. He's coming straight down from Engineering."
She had reached the elevator and pressed the button, waiting to go up.
Almost there.
As the door dinged open and she looked up, she realized a fatal error in her timing.
Eric had been in Engineering, most likely discussing the progress in cracking her computer. Engineering was on Level Three, and right in the middle of that was the maintenance corridor.   If, for instance, he heard that something devastating was happening to Project Alchernon on Level Seven, he would use the closest route to get there… the maintenance elevator.
She looked up directly into Eric's steely blue eyes.
You have to be kidding.
She really had a streak of bad luck lately.
Eric stared at her, and probably the closest thing he had felt to surprise in years was now written all over his face.
For a moment, they both stared at each other, neither one moving.  Then, Eric jumped forward out of the elevator to grab her. Unaccustomed to the overly large boots she was wearing, she tripped over her own feet and fell backward onto the floor.
Eric fell on top of her, and she struggled fiercely as he sought to restrain her. Within a few moments, he had her arms firmly pinned to the floor. His arms felt like iron bands, and she knew she could not break free of his hold.
If I had waited just a few minutes, I would have missed him entirely. I'd be on my way to freedom instead of trapped on the ground beneath Eric Martin.
He finally spoke, slightly out of breath.
"What have you managed to do now, Alice? I guess it was too much to hope that you would behave yourself."
He added with a hint of malice, more to himself than her, "Someone will pay dearly for their lack of attention."

A Book Obession Tour Review & Giveaway - Six by Rachel Robinson @rachelgrobinson @KT_Clapsadl

SIX
Sundancer #1
Rachel Robinson

Emmalina is an immortal darkling. A half human, half dark witch. Though she was born with all six emotions, she has arrived at her eighteenth birthday and all but one miserable emotion has fled her body.
The mission of the dark witches who control the new, darker world is simple—eradicate weakness. Weakness is summed up in one word. Emotion. Or, the six. Anger, fear, sadness, joy, surprise, and love.
The dark witches want her. She wants something else more.
She wants six.

About the Author:  Rachel grew up in a small, quiet town full of loud talkers. Her words were always only loud on paper. She has been writing stories and creating characters for as long as she can remember. After living on the west coast for many years she recently moved to Virginia Beach, VA.Escaped is her first Paranormal Romance novel. You can find her over at The Mean Girl Diaries writing non-fiction of the satirical sort.

Excerpt:

Then, I see the specific memory—the one that haunts me. It is the memory that consumes my being with longing because I have been unable to attach an emotion to it. I feel as if I am in that memory at this moment.

“I’m going to get you Emmalina,” my mother says. I run so fast that my tiny heart is thumping rapidly. Sticky sweat surrounds my face and mats my hair at my hairline. My feet are bare and the gray haze is the lightest I ever remember it being. I look over my shoulder and laugh as I see her running after me. She has her hands stretched out toward me and her brown hair bounces as she runs. It is a dream in slow motion that I get to relive. The moment is perfect. Her smile is electric. Her voice is sweeter than any treat from the old world.

“You can’t catch me, Mommy!” My singsong child’s voice rings back at her. I want her to catch me. I want her hands tickling me. She grabs me and lifts me under my arms, and up over her head. I can touch the sky. I am flying. She spins around in a circle but I do not look around. I look at her smiling face. It is so cheerful, it is so perfect. It holds the same emotion that I feel in this moment.

We are complete. I am not empty.

The emotion rips me from the inside. “I feel joy,” I tell Finn as I throw my head back laughing at the sky. The emotion tears through me more powerful than anything else, filling me with purpose. I am elated, delighted, I feel contentment and relief. Excitement courses through my veins more powerful than dark magic. It is incomparable. I splash the water at my sides and giggle because I want to, not because I think it prudent. I am so happy I remember her—thankful Finn has forced this from me in his own way. I jump toward him and he catches me under my arms.
He lifts me above his head and I feel like I am floating on a cloud in an alternate universe. He spins in one slow circle. I gaze down at him knowing this is what my mother wants for me. I vow to make her sacrifice worth it.

Finn laughs loudly—a hearty, meaningful laugh. We revel in this perfect moment together just Finn and I and our joyful laughter.

I know then that his laugh is the only sound I like more than my own heartbeat.

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 unicorns - I really liked it!!
**Received ebook as part of the blog tour for an honest review

The cover is absolutely stunning and would totally get my attention :)  I’m not sure what it is about eyes, but they are what attract me :)

Okay, this is definitely a different book.  At first, I didn’t think I was going to like it because I wasn’t connecting.  I think this is the design of the book though.  Because they main character is lacking emotions, you are sort of in her shoes while you are reading.  As the story goes not though, I became more and more involved in the story, and it drew more of my attention and emotions.  Emma is unusual, and you are always getting more details that you had no clue was coming.  There are a few areas where I was confused.

Some of the characters are just hilarious especially Lana who was my favorite.  She totally reminds me of a high school student with her attitude and snarkiness. There really is quite a bit going on with the battles and drama going on.  The dialogue and descriptions used by the author come together quite nicely.

Finn is a great guy who is always there for everyone and is a man of his word which I find very admirable.  He is a protector and friend.

Okay the ending for me was both awesome and sucky, but you will have to read it to see what I mean.  I refuse to ruin the journey in the story for anyone.  In the end, it was quite an emotional rollercoaster.

I recommend this to anyone who wants a new spin on witches and emotions with magic throughout. ;)

Do you know who Irena Sendler (Sendlerowa)???

Bless the Lady Plumber!!!

Remember this lady?

Irena Sendler

Died: May 12, 2008 (aged 98)
Warsaw , Poland

**This is from an email I received from my Dad that is being sent all over the world & I'm not sure whose words these are but they are not mine :)

During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.

She had an ulterior motive.

Irena smuggled Jewish infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried.   She also carried a burlap sack in the back of her truck, for larger kids.

She kept a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking which covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2 500 kids/infants.

Ultimately, she was caught, however, and the Nazi’s broke both of her legs and arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she had smuggled out,  in a glass jar that she buried under a tree in her back yard.  After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived and tried to reunite the family.  Most had been gassed.  Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or were adopted.

In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize.  She was not selected.
Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.  Later another politician,
Barack Obama, won for his work as a community organizer for ACORN.

In MEMORIAM - 65 YEARS LATER
I’m doing my small part by blogging this message.
I hope you’ll consider doing the same.  It is now almost 70 years since the Second World War in Europe ended.

This message is being e-mailed as I blog it as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1 900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated!

Now, more than ever, with Iran and others, claiming the HOLOCAUST to be ‘a myth’, it’s imperative to make sure the world never forgets, because there are others who would like to do it again.

Join us and be a link in the memorial chain and help us distribute it around the world.

My Thoughts - I thought it was important to share this lady’s accomplishments.  Since this is a book blog, I have found 2 books on this wonderful woman to share with you :)

Life in a Jar: The Irene Sendler Project
by Jack Mayer

Book Description:  During World War II, Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic social worker, organized a rescue network of fellow social workers to save 2,500 Jewish children from certain death in the Warsaw ghetto. Incredibly, after the war her heroism, like that of many others, was suppressed by communist Poland and remained virtually unknown for 60 years.

Unknown, that is, until three high school girls from an economically depressed, rural school district in southeast Kansas stumbled upon a tantalizing reference to Sendler’s rescues, which they fashioned into a history project, a play they called Life in a Jar. Their innocent drama was first seen in Kansas, then the Midwest, then New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, and finally Poland, where they elevated Irena Sendler to a national hero, championing her legacy of tolerance and respect for all people.

Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project is a Holocaust history and more. It is the inspirational story of Protestant students from Kansas, each carrying her own painful burden, each called in her own complex way to the history of a Catholic woman who knocked on Jewish doors in the Warsaw ghetto and, in Sendler’s own words, “tried to talk the mothers out of their children.” Inspired by Irena Sendler, they are living examples of the power of one person to change the world and models for young people everywhere.

Sixty percent (60%) of the royalties of Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project are donated to the Irena Sendler/Life in a Jar Foundation. The foundation promotes Irena Sendler’s legacy and encourages educators and students to emulate the project by focusing on unsung heroes in history to teach respect and understanding among all people, regardless of race, religion, or creed.

The Other Schindler... Irena Sendler: Savior of the Holocaust Children
by Abhijit Thite & Priya Gokhale

Book Description:  An Inspiring True Story of One Woman who Saved 2500 Jewish Children. This is the incredible true story that combines many facts - together, they form one of history’s most fascinating and at the same time, gruesome eras.

Germany’s occupation of Poland during the Second World War set off a chain of events that were unprecedented in their complexities of human behaviour. With the largest Jewish population in Europe, Poland suffered the worst fallout of German atrocities. From containment of Jews in the infamous Warsaw Ghetto to their ultimate annihilation in the extermination camps, World War II forms a sordid tale of discrimination and hate.

Against this is the fragrance of hope and kindness. When the world is in peril, deliverance always comes, and so it was that a few people defied the odds to emerge angel in times of distress, beacons of hope amidst the throes of darkness.

This is the true account of a woman who was as gentle as she was steely-minded.

Irena Sendler, a little lady who saved 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto is today known all over the world, with thousand of websites dedicated to her. This, though, is the first complete published book of her incredible journey from an inspired young girl to a nonagenarian who spurned all personal glory.

The Buzz

"Kudos to Ms. de Montigny for writing an original variation on the fantasy epic--unicorns intermingling with dinosaurs! The book's themes include the humane and environmental concerns that Watership Down and the films of Hayao Miyazaki have in common. If you have a middle grader or are just young at heart, pick up The Shadow Of The Unicorn." ~ 5 Star Review, Stuart W., Amazon

"The Shadow of the Unicorn is a must-read for all unicorn lovers, but even more so for the ones, like my self, who hadn't read anything about them yet. It is a thrilling and encouraging story about a young unicorn that has to save his herd after a meteor nearly destroyed their environment and killed the dinosaurs. Suzanne de Montigny created a compelling universe with believable characters and a great adventure story to challenge them with. While the story finishes in this book, I can't wait to read about the new adventures the unicorns will face.." ~ 5 Star Review, Antje H., Amazon

"This story pulled me in with a beautiful portrayal of a time and place where unicorns and dinosaurs live side by side. It moved me forward with unexpected twist and turns (a requirement in any good story). I found it hard to put the book down and was totally engaged in seeing the young characters (unicorns and dinosaurs) survive and grow because of the challenges they faced." ~ 5 Star Review, NW Harris, Amazon

"I just finished reading The Shadow of the Unicorn. What a story teller Suzanne de Montigny is. She combined unicorns with dinosaurs and spun a tail of magic that kept me turning the pages, not to mention throwing in an evil that came in the form of a human! What an enjoyable story - and here I thought these mystic animals were extinct. I just didn't know what to look for!" ~ 5 Star Review, Penny E., Amazon

"What a delightfully unique book. Unicorns and dinosaurs facing changing conditions. Darius is a young dinosaur capable of seeing the future. Azaria is a young unicorn who becomes a friend and learns from Darius. Yes, there are humans in this book. They are the villains of the story. Greedy beasts. I think both boys and girls will love this story. Very quick paced and easy to read. A delightful story, and I look forward to more from this author." ~ 5 Star Review, DM Lawrence, Amazon

Cover Reveal - Hero, Cursed (Mythos: Stories from Olympus #2) by Diantha Jones @DianthaJones

Before he knew the Oracle...
Before he knew the Quad...
Before the Great Unknown threatened his world...
He was a hero, cursed forever.

Cover Designed by: Colin F. Barnes
Publication Date: March 18, 2014
Genre: YA Mythology
Series: Mythos: Stories from Olympus #2/Oracle of Delphi #3.5

*WARNING* To be read after Prophecy of Solstice's End (Oracle of Delphi #3)
Contains MAJOR spoilers!

Shunned by a family that doesn't understand him, demigod Lenka Tahile aka "Swindle" is a complete loner and he likes it that way. Then he meets the hero, Ace Remedy, the brother of an infamous demigod Prince, and his life goes from bad to worse. Ace is loud, rude, and disruptive to his peaceful existence in every way. He's also hilarious and daring, and Swindle ends up finding a friend just when he thought he'd never have another.

But little does he know, becoming friends with Ace was all part of the Fates' plan. Now his past is slowly coming back to haunt him and there's nothing he can do to stop it. Nothing but try not to bring to light the lost love, the failed hopes, and the cursed existence that he would kill to keep in the dark.

Five Facts about Hero, Cursed

1. Lenka Tahile is a South African name. The MC was born in South Africa.

2. "Swindle" is Lenka's celestial name. He is a son of Hermes. Figure it out.

3. The hawk on the cover is not a tattoo. His name is Bill and he's Swindle's Fauna Morph, an animal that morphs into a weapon on command.

4. Though it isn't showcased on the cover, Swindle has extremely curly hair. Out of control, I tell you.

5. Just like Solar, Defeated, this novella switches back and forth between the present and the past, and reveals what life was like for Swindle before the Oracle of Delphi came along.
